Help us honor the men and women who have given their lives in service to the United States of America this Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Bohemian National Cemetery will host our annual event on Monday, May 25. We'll meet at the historic gatehouse at 9 a.m., walk over to the World Wars I and II Memorial for a flag-raising ceremony and then head into the Ceremony Hall of the Columbarium building for a special service. Afterwards, we'll have refreshments in the gatehouse -- and those who are interested can take a walking tour of the cemetery's military monuments led by Chuck Betzhold, a U.S. Air Force veteran and cemetery trustee.

Please join us! 🇺🇸 🇨🇿 🇸🇰 Czech Consulate General in Chicago T. G. Masaryk Czech School

Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery is looking for volunteers to help with a variety of events and tasks throughout the year. Just a few hours of your time can help ensure that the cemetery can continue to provide a quality experience for all visitors.

You can help us with events including:
- Spring and fall walking tours
- Memorial Day
- 4th of July
- Veterans Day
- Special tours for dignitaries from the Czech Republic and Slovakia
- Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery member events
- Events to mark the 150th anniversary of the cemetery in 2027

Light tasks include:
- Placing small American flags along the roadways prior to holidays and removing them afterwards
- Placing parking and informational signage at our events
- Greeting and registering participants and handing out programs at events
- Providing food and beverages, setting up serving tables and cleaning up afterwards

For those who enjoy working outside, we have a variety of projects throughout the year. Outdoor tasks include:
- Forestry work, including cutting down trees, clearing fallen limbs, picking up branches, pruning bushes and removing invasive plants
- Watering flowers
- General cleanup of the grounds, especially around our more popular monuments like the Cubs Wall, military memorials, Cermak mausoleum, the “Mother” statue, as well as our historic buildings like the Gatehouse, the Main Office, the Crematorium/Columbarium and the Masaryk Mausoleum

And if you are handy, we need people with electrical, plumbing, painting and mechanical skills throughout the year.

So if you can, please join us for some rewarding volunteer work at Bohemian National Cemetery. To volunteer, please contact us at [email protected].

There was a great turnout for Friends' annual membership meeting on Sunday! Thanks to all who came out and especially to Mario Machnicki of Marion Restoration, who gave a fascinating presentation about the restoration of historic masonry in general and cemetery monuments in particular. The food at Grand Duke's restaurant was delicious, the beer was refreshing and it was great to connect with friends both old and new.

If you're not yet a member of Friends, you can join at friendsofbnc.org. You'll receive our newsletter and will be supporting our work to preserve and maintain our beautiful Bohemian National Cemetery. Donations are also always appreciated! Dekujeme!

This event will be held at Grand Duke's Restaurant in Downers Grove and will feature a presentation by Mario Machnicki, president of Marion Restoration, a firm that is renowned for its expertise in architectural conservation. Marion Restoration has carried out many fascinating projects in and around Chicago, including several at Bohemian National Cemetery.

Bohemian National Cemetery has been in existence for over 147 years. After purchasing 50 acres of farmland in what was at the time unincorporated Chicago, the newly formed Bohemian National Cemetery Association quickly put up a sign, conducted its first burial and erected a boundary fence.

More than120,000 burials have since taken place at the cemetery, which has grown to more than 120 acres, and the lengthy network of brick posts and iron fencing that surrounds the cemetery is now in need of extensive repairs.

Thanks to donations from individuals and a grant from Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery is carrying out repairs to the limestone posts and iron panels that grace the entrance to the historic gatehouse.

But much of the long stretch of iron-panel fencing and posts along Pulaski Road is also deteriorating, rusted and in some places partially collapsed. Friends of BNC -- whose mission is to promote the historical significance, enhance the beauty, and preserve the artistic heritage of Bohemian National Cemetery -- is taking on the restoration of this section as our current project.

Perhaps you have family members whose final resting place is within these historic confines, or maybe you simply appreciate the unique history and beauty of Bohemian National Cemetery. This Giving Tuesday, please consider making a donation to the Friends of BNC to help us continue our restoration work: https://friends-of-bohemian-national-cemetery.square.site/shop/support/4

You can read more about the work that's been done so far in our latest newsletter:https://www.friendsofbnc.org/newsletters/vol22no2.pdf

This is an ambitious project, and we thank you for your support! Děkujeme Vám!

We were proud to host Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda and other delegates from the Czech Republic at Bohemian National Cemetery on September 21. Mayor Svoboda was particularly interested in visiting the Cermak family mausoleum, where Anton Cermak, a Czech immigrant who served as mayor of Chicago from 1931 to 1933, is laid to rest. Chuck Michalek, board member of BNC and Friends of BNC, showed the dignitaries and representatives from Prague-Chicago Sister Cities around the cemetery and the Columbarium.
