Beverly Unitarian Church

Beverly Unitarian Church Beverly Unitarian Church BUC membership is inclusive. These principles and sources of faith are the backbone of our religious community.

Whatever your age, religious background or perspective; whatever your race, or cultural, ethnic, or sexual orientation, if you are a person of good will and earnest purpose you are welcome here. We celebrate our differences, but we are united by a common desire to think deeply, act responsibly, nurture our spirits, and help heal our world. There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist co

ngregations affirm and promote:

* The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
* Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
* Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
* A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
* The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
* The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
* Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. Unitarian Universalism (UU) draws from many sources:

* Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
* Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;
* Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
* Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;
* Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.
* Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

SUNDAY Morning Sermon
June 7, 2026 ~ 10:30 AM
Rev. Allen Harden
Sermon: "As We Live: forever rediscovering, reinventing, and
renewing our lives."
Or reimagining and restoring – anything but keeping our heads down and letting the days pass by on their own terms, unchallenged and uninspired. We are the primary arbiters of our own futures, the designers of our fate. Our biggest job is to embrace the challenge of our own life, and to forge meaning, purpose, and beauty as we go forth. Our UU heritage suggests that there is no one path, but that all things are dynamic, and maybe, subjective. “Revelation is never sealed”. I understand this to mean that even ultimacy can change – over time,
between peoples, and within our own hearts.

Childcare is available during this service. Older children are invited to stay for the service if they wish.
The Beverly Unitarian Church welcomes people of every religious background, race, ethnicity, age, gender, and sexual and affectional orientation.

Sermon: Revisiting Israel/Palestine

Last year, we, as a congregation, passed a resolution supporting the rights of Palestinian persons, and specifically condemning US military and financial support for destruction and ongoing genocide in Gaza. A year later, some things have changed but not really in a meaningful way. Meanwhile, public attention is turned to the joint Israeli/American assault on Iran. What do we know about any possibility for a peaceful and just future in Isarael and Lebanon? What might we do to encourage progress toward this goal?

Considerations on the dilemma we face when there is a definite conflict between our sense of morality and our UU principles. How do we continue to value and benefit from the excellent contributions that were created by a person who has fallen from grace and behaved in ways that appall? In our UU world, Rev. Forrest Church, a brilliant theologian, is a prime example. Then there is Woody Allen and many more.

Sermon: "How the Light Lands"

UU theology often espouses the idea of spiritual truth as light streaming through the many colors of stained-glass windows. This service asks, what does that colorful light land on? How does it reach into the alcoves and recesses of our lives; transform the earth we walk on, and allow us, like a prism, to refract those colors back into the world?

Sermon: "UU Shared Values: Equity"
Available for viewing here: https://youtu.be/R_Pd9nbXzZE
Rev. Allen Harden
Our UU statement of purposes encourages us to live our shared
values, among which is equity. “We declare that every person is
inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love and compassion. We covenant to use our time, wisdom, attention, and money to build and sustain fully accessible and inclusive communities.” What is equity that it is of prime importance to us? How is our commitment to equity grounded in love.

CONCERT AT THE CASTLE featuring Mark Dvorak

Saturday, April 11, 2026 Concert begins at 7 p.m.

Dvorak is a singer with an “encyclopedic knowledge of traditional songs. His original material has been called “wondrous” and “profound.”

His concerts are a mix of the familiar and the new, traditional folk and standards from the Great American Songbook. He plays authentic country blues guitar and picks great old-time banjo. Mark enjoys involving his audiences in sing along songs, just like The Weavers used to do, and mixes in his own infectious and well-crafted originals.

Mark sings in a clear, signature voice and is a very engaging performer.
He likes to joke around with the folks who attend his shows and has a refreshing, down-to-earth presence.

Tickets are available for $25 online or at the door.

I'm sure that the first story that I ever learned involved a battle between good guys and bad guys. One was going to win and one was going to lose. Today, I've come to doubt the truth of that story. What if getting to know and support each other is more important than winning a war?
