Work underway at Lake Willowmere is restoring one of Graceland Cemetery & Arboretum’s defining landscape experiences—honoring its historic pastoral character while looking toward the future.
Led by Hoerr Schaudt, the project is reopening long views across the water to the island and significant memorials, while introducing expansive prairie-like lawns, naturalistic plantings, and seasonal displays of daffodils, redbuds, and whitebuds.
At the heart of the lake, the island’s connection to Graceland will be renewed with a handcrafted white oak bridge, creating both a functional crossing and a distinctive new landscape element.
The project also strengthens the lake as a living ecosystem, with new aquatic plantings, reclaimed trees providing habitat for wildlife, and improvements to water circulation, clarity, and long-term health.
Together, these thoughtful improvements reconnect water, landscape, architecture, and memory, renewing Lake Willowmere as a memorable place for generations to come.
