St. Mary of Perpetual Help All Saints St. Anthony Parish

St. Mary of Perpetual Help All Saints St. Anthony Parish Serving Bridgeport since 1882 St. Mary of Perpetual Help Church has been proudly serving the Bridgeport community for 140 years.

Continuing in a tradition of Polish foundation, the parish community of today is a multicultural and diverse group, but united in faith of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ and service to one another in His name. Founded in 1882 as a Polish parish. It remained a parish for Polish workers in the Union Stockyards until the yards closed in the early 1970s. In recent years the neighborhood has seen a growth

in new housing and has seen an influx of new residents of many backgrounds and cultures. Mary of Perpetual Help was built off the same plans as St. Casimir in Detroit in 1889, which was eventually razed.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of our 40-day Lenten season, and serves as a day of repentance, fasting, and reflection to prepare for Easter. Ashes are created from the previous year's Palm Sunday palms, blessed, and applied to the forehead as a symbol of mortality, mourning for sins, and a commitment to spiritual renewal.

Services today will be at:
- 9:00am Mass with Distribution of Ashes
- Noon Service with Distribution of Ashes
- 6:00pm Confession
- 7:00pm Mass with Distribution of Ashes

While attending Mass is not required, Ash Wednesday is an obligatory day of fasting and abstinence from meat for Catholics. Healthy adults ages 18–59 are required to eat only one full meal, plus two smaller meals that together do not equal a full meal. Ages 14 and older are to abstain from eating meat.

Today we rejoice in the great mystery of God’s love made flesh. In the humility of a manger, Christ our Savior is born, bringing light to the world and peace to every heart that welcomes Him.

“Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a Savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord.”
— Luke 2:10–11

May the joy of the newborn Christ fill your hearts and homes this Christmas and always.
