HOLY COMMUNION • THE LORD'S SUPPER
Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper, is a sacrament of the Church, not an independent spiritual activity. It belongs within the structure of local church order, pastoral oversight, and covenant fellowship.
A believer should receive Communion:
• At their own Church home, where they are taught, accountable, and spiritually covered.
• Or at a Church where they are under watch care, meaning they are temporarily submitted to that ministry’s pastoral oversight until full membership is established.
This protects the sacrament from becoming casual, unauthorized, or disconnected from the Body of Christ.
Why Communion Belongs in One’s Church Home
• Communion is a pastoral act, not a personal ritual.
• It is administered by those entrusted with sacramental authority.
• It requires doctrinal unity, spiritual accountability, and proper examination (1 Corinthians 11:28).
• It is part of the believer’s covenant identity within their local assembly.
Receiving Communion outside of one’s Church home—without covering—breaks the biblical pattern of order and oversight.
The Role of Watch Care
Watch care is a temporary covenant relationship where a believer:
• Is spiritually covered
• Is accountable to leadership
• Is permitted to participate in sacraments
• Is treated as part of the flock until full membership is completed
Under watch care, Communion is appropriate because the believer is not spiritually “unattached.”
Why Communion Should Not Be Taken Randomly
Without a Church home or watch care:
• There is no pastoral oversight
• No doctrinal alignment
• No accountability
• No spiritual examination
• No covenant relationship
This leads to the danger Paul warns about: “drinking damnation to yourself” (1 Corinthians 11:29).
Communion is not a private devotion, it is a corporate sacrament.
What About Believers Who Truly Have No Church Home?
If a believer has no Church home at all, they may receive Communion only:
• At a biblically sound Church
• Under pastoral authority
• With proper examination
• Until they establish covenant membership
This ensures the sacrament remains sacred, supervised, and doctrinally protected.
Holy Communion must be received:
• At one’s Church home,
• Or under watch care,
• Or temporarily at a biblically sound Church if no home exists.
Because Communion is:
• A covenant meal
• A pastoral act
• A sacrament of order
• A function of accountability
• A sign of belonging to the Body
Not a personal ritual performed anywhere at will.
