Dear God,

Being invited into places
of deep pain and profound joy
is a sacred responsibility
and great privilege.

Make me an open conduit
of your love and light, to honor
those who welcome me
and you, their Maker.

Let it be so.

God of My Life,

“Whoever wants to come after me must
deny themselves and take up their cross
and follow me.”

Jesus said it, and I want to do it.

In my early years, I heard this as a
strangely exhilarating call to give
my life in public martyrdom,

but that no longer holds any appeal.

This life is too great a gift to squander
just to prove I am worthy or to
earn a heavenly crown –

and that gets at the real problem:

My fantasy turned my focus inward.
It fixed my gaze on me, not
on you and my neighbors.

I was missing the whole point:

The cross is not self-denial per se;
it is giving myself to serve you
through people, as Jesus did –

“For God so loved the world.”

Coming after him amounts to
loving you with my whole being
and loving others as myself,

and those actions are indivisible.

Help me to love humbly, freely,
generously, inclusively, devoting
myself to justice and mercy.

Jesus said it, and I want to do it.

Timeless God,

Already, summer is fading into autumn:
the quality of morning light belies
the high afternoon temperatures.

The transition feels bittersweet to me –

While great blessings like just ahead,
I see that some doors I had hoped
to walk through are closing.

I want to fully inhabit each moment.

Help me recall (not relive) yesterday,
receive (not rush) tomorrow, and
relish (not disregard) today.

Let it be so.

Every heavy burden we bear

and profound graces. They
are accessible to all of us.

When life is hard, help me to
experience your goodness.

Every good blessing we enjoy
is shadowed by small irritants
and weighty problems. They
come with embodied living.

When life is easy, help me to
gain strength and wisdom.
