Happy Holy Week!

Did you know that for us Catholics the palm branch is a symbol of martyrdom? That is why on holy cards and Catholic paintings you will see saints (and blesseds) who have been killed for their faith holding a palm branch.

First thing is that it's rooted in the Bible. Revelation 7:9 says, "After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands."

Second, the palm branch symbolizes sacrificial love. Just as Our Lord willingly suffered death for us on the Cross, the martyrs willingly offer their lives to Jesus. Many times we say the martyrs lost their lives but a better way of looking at it is they offered their lives. We are all called to live our lives for Jesus. The martyrs proved their fidelity by offering theirs as a sacrifice to Our Lord.

Finally, the palm branch held by a martyr is a sign of hope. A sign that all the evil in the world can not extinguish goodness. It is alao a symbol of eternal glory and victory over death. Jesus asks us all to 'pick up our cross and follow Him'. The martyrs did that literally and figuratively.

Holy Martyrs of God, pray for us!

Don't forget to let the DGBA know you're coming by RSVPing to this year's Easter Party. Today is Laetare Sunday. The name "Laetare" comes from the Latin word for "rejoice." It is a special day within the liturgical season of Lent, observed on the Fourth Sunday and comes a little over half way through Lent. This Sunday marks a moment of joy and hope amidst the penitential season of Lent, reminding the faithful of the upcoming joy of Easter. It's a reminder that even in the midst of penance and preparation, there is always a cause for joy as we anticipate the Resurrection of Christ.
