Fourth Sunday of Lent: “The Paralytic”
The fourth Sunday of Lent remembers the miracles of healing performed by our Lord Jesus Christ, especially the healing of the paralyzed man who had been sick for 38 years. This week’s theme reminds us of God’s mercy and compassion toward the sick, suffering, and oppressed.
During His ministry, Christ healed many people: the blind, lepers, demon-possessed, and the paralyzed. These miracles showed that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath, and that the Sabbath is not only for physical rest but also for acts of mercy, healing, and doing good. Christ taught that the true meaning of the Sabbath is to serve God and help others. We are called to practice love, mercy, and compassion toward those in need. Acts of kindness like helping the hungry, sick, imprisoned, and strangers, are considered service done directly to Christ Himself.
The Church is also entrusted with the ministry of healing through prayer, teaching, and spiritual care. Priests and teachers should help restore the broken, strengthen the weak, and guide believers toward righteousness. If we approach God with faith, repentance, and hope, He will grant healing and mercy in His own time.
This Sunday therefore calls believers to:
• Remember Christ’s miracles of healing
• Live by the Spirit rather than the flesh
• Serve others with love and compassion
• Trust in God’s mercy and healing power
