Sixth Sunday of Lent: ገብርኄር | The Good Servant

The sixth Sunday of the Great Lent is called Gebrhier, which means the good servant. The name of this Sunday comes from the hymn of St. Yared, “መኑ ውእቱ ገብር ኄር ወምእመን” (Who is the good and faithful servant), and the teaching of Christ in Matthew 25:15-30 about the faithful servant who works diligently with what the Lord has given him.

On this day the Church remembers the parable of the talents, where a master entrusted his servants with talents before leaving on a journey. Some servants worked hard and multiplied the talents they received, while one servant buried his talent and did nothing with it. When the master returned, he rewarded the faithful servants and rebuked the lazy servant.

Through this teaching, Christ reminds believers that God has given each person gifts and responsibilities. At His Second Coming, He will ask everyone how they used the talents, grace, and opportunities He entrusted to them. Those who serve faithfully and work diligently for God will receive the reward of entering into the joy of their Lord.

This message applies not only to church leaders and ministers but also to all believers. Each person has a role in serving the Church, helping others, and living a life that produces spiritual fruit and good works. Therefore, this Sunday calls us to recognize our talents, use them faithfully, and serve God with diligence and humility.

Fifth Sunday of Lent: ደበረ ዘይት | Mount of Olives

The fifth Sunday of Lent, known as Debre Zeyt or Mount of Olives, is the Sunday that falls in the middle of the fasting season. This week we remember the teaching of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the Mount of Olives, where He spoke to His disciples about His Second Coming and the end of the world.

On this mountain, Christ warned His disciples about the signs that will come before the end, such as wars, tribulations, natural disasters, and the rise of false prophets and false teachers who will try to deceive many people; because of increasing sin and lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold.

Through this teaching, the Lord calls us to be watchful, strong in faith, and careful not to be deceived. He reminds us that many will try to mislead the faithful, but those who remain faithful and endure to the end will be saved.

This Sunday also reminds us that Christ will not return as He came the first time in humility, but in great glory with His holy angels to judge the world. Therefore, the Church calls us on this day to repent, live righteously, and remain spiritually prepared for the coming of the Lord.

Fourth Sunday of Lent: “The Paralytic”

The fourth Sunday of Lent remembers the miracles of healing performed by our Lord Jesus Christ, especially the healing of the paralyzed man who had been sick for 38 years. This week’s theme reminds us of God’s mercy and compassion toward the sick, suffering, and oppressed.

During His ministry, Christ healed many people: the blind, lepers, demon-possessed, and the paralyzed. These miracles showed that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath, and that the Sabbath is not only for physical rest but also for acts of mercy, healing, and doing good. Christ taught that the true meaning of the Sabbath is to serve God and help others. We are called to practice love, mercy, and compassion toward those in need. Acts of kindness like helping the hungry, sick, imprisoned, and strangers, are considered service done directly to Christ Himself.

The Church is also entrusted with the ministry of healing through prayer, teaching, and spiritual care. Priests and teachers should help restore the broken, strengthen the weak, and guide believers toward righteousness. If we approach God with faith, repentance, and hope, He will grant healing and mercy in His own time.

This Sunday therefore calls believers to:
• Remember Christ’s miracles of healing
• Live by the Spirit rather than the flesh
• Serve others with love and compassion
• Trust in God’s mercy and healing power

“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” - Romans 6:11

We were blessed to host our “Season of Preparation” Conference on February 15th! As we entered the first week of the Fast, we gathered together from our children to our elders, to reflect on what it means to truly die to sin and live for Christ.

May this season purify our hearts and lead us into a life fully alive in Him🙏🏽

ሳልሰይቲ ሰንበት: ምኵራብ | 3rd Week of Great Lent: Synagogue

እስመ ቅንአተ ቤትከ በልዐኒ | For the zeal of Your house consumed me

The third Sunday of the Holy Great Lent is known as “Synagogue.” We thank God who has brought us to this blessed day of fasting and prayer!

This Sabbath remembers our Lord Jesus Christ who entered the synagogues and the temple on the Sabbath, teaching the Word of God and performing many miracles. He healed the sick, comforted the broken, freed those in bo***ge, and preached the Gospel of salvation. Through His teaching, He gave life to souls and showed the true path of righteousness.

Our Lord also entered the temple and cleansed it, reminding us that His house is a house of prayer and holiness (Matthew 21:12–13). This calls each of us to examine ourselves and to keep our hearts pure, for we are the temple of God. During this holy season, we are invited to repentance, prayer, fasting, and renewal so that Christ may dwell within us.

Let us continue our Lenten journey with humility and holiness, remembering the works and teachings of our Lord, and striving to live according to His commandments.

Readings (Chapter & Verse):
• Colossians 2:16–End
• James 2:14–End
• Acts 10:1–9
• Psalm 68:8
• John 2:12-End

May God grant us a blessed and fruitful fast.
