Relics are physical remains or objects associated with a saint, like these relics of St. Elizabeth Seton at our parish. In the Sacred Scriptures, Elisha is the first evidence of miraculous powers attributed to physical contact with a deceased person’s bones (2 Kings 3:21). Contact between the bones of the deceased prophet and a dead person brought the person back to life, so it is clear how God’s salvation also operates in the body.

Since Greek philosophy and much of the ancient world erroneously identified the body as the source of sin, the first Christians needed to emphasize the importance and resurrection of the body very strongly. After all, the body is the place God chose to manifest himself! As St. Irenaeus explains, “the body is to life as a sponge is to water or a torch is to fire.” The veneration of relics emerged in this context.

The Fathers left us another rationale for veneration of martyrs’ bodies: the bones of every Christian are to be venerated because they are nourished with the body of Christ through the Eucharist. Relics became a pastoral tool for visually preaching triumph over death.

San Vitale’s presbytery is a marvel for the eyes and for the spirit. Every aspect recounts something from our faith and our history--that of ours or of the church. ✨

The vault, for example, represents the richness of creation, through the green and gold colors and the garland of flora and fauna. The peacocks evoke an Eastern tradition: they were the choice food of sovereigns from the East because it was thought that they preserve youth; Christians take up this theme to symbolize He who keeps us alive always, who cures us from death. ✨

None of this is by chance: the Lamb is depicted near 27 stars, 3 to the 3rd power, the hyperbolic allegory of the Trinity. The Lamb is placed at the center of this magnificent garden, but also at the center of a large cross: one understands a parallelism between the fruit of the tree of Paradise and the new fruit, the Lamb, hung from the cross.✨

Thank you Pietre Vive Milano for this photo and reflection!

We often hear the phrase "you are the temple of God," (1 Corinthians 16) but what does this really mean? As Fr. Daniele explained at our event last week, the Greek word translated as "temple" here really means the "Holy of Holies," the holiest part of the Jewish Temple, where the Tabernacle housed the Ark of the Covenant with the Ten Commandments and a pot of manna, where God's presence appeared.

To say, then, that "you are the temple of God" means that you are the holiest part of the Temple, that the Holy Spirit dwells in you, that in Jesus Christ the Temple is rebuilt in you.

In the Temple, the Tabernacle was built of tapestry curtains and contained a pot of manna, the bread that sustained the Israelites in the desert; in our churches, like the above, the tabernacle contains not manna but the Eucharist, the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ that sustains us always.

Happy feast of Our Lady of the Rosary! Join us in-person or virtually for the Rosary at 6 pm CST. Register at tinyurl.com/our-lady-rosary. Zoom meeting ID is 87445839843.

The icon shows Mary and Jesus giving the Rosary to St. Catherine of Siena and St. Dominic. Jesus blesses us with one hand and offers the Rosary, itself a blessing, with his other. The icon descends from a 6th century Eastern one which shows Mary as Queen of Heaven. Referring to Mary this way recognizes her as Mother of God, as Jesus is the heavenly King of the Universe and, in the Hebrew tradition, the king's mother was acknowledged as a queen. In Revelation, Mary is portrayed as a warrior queen, fighting evil not with weapons but with love, justice, nonviolence...there, like in this image, she is encircled by 12 stars representing the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 apostles, our ancestors in faith who fought for what is good and true.
