Keeping up with the Tradition

Celebrating Palm Sunday by singing Hosanna to the king of Kings and waving palm leaves in remembrance of John 12:13

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”

Throughout the Bible, sacrificial lambs were killed in order to bear the burden of people's sins. Sin was transferred from the guilty party to the Lamb. The person was declared innocent, while the animal bore the sin's just punishment: death.

The sacrificial system, instituted by God himself, was limited in scope: the sacrifice of atonement was required every year. But it was all meant to foreshadow Jesus. The 𝙇𝙖𝙢𝙗 𝙤𝙛 𝙂𝙤𝙙 came to fulfill and supersede the sacrificial system. His death on the cross atoned for all of humankind's sins once and for all, through faith in him. The Lamb of God makes possible our relationship with God.

A baby, wrapped in swaddling clothes, foretold by prophets. It was the plan of the ages! God in flesh to take away the sin of the world by being a sacrifice himself. That should fill us with wonder and awe every day!

We're in a society that avoid pain at all costs, surrounded by medications to relieve pain. But rather than run away from pain, Jesus ran headlong into it. In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus pleaded with the Father to consider an alternate plan, knowing full well the pain that awaited him. But Jesus also suffered the emotional agony of being forsaken by His Father, bearing all the ugly sins of the world on his shoulders.

He willingly walked into his suffering, humbling himself to be ridiculed by the very ones he came to save. Every agonizing moment He hung on that cross was another whispered "yes" to this painful course. Every sorrow and suffering we face, the 𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 faced it first, and bore the wrath of God for us. And He did it all for love.

When the Jews heard the Jesus call himself the 𝗦𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗻, their minds would have immediately leapt to Daniel 7, where Daniel prophesies the Son of Man coming with authority to judge all humanity. Jesus was claiming this title of authority for Himself. The title also refers to Jesus' humanity. From his position as Lord of the universe, He stopped down to become a servant, washing His disciple's dusty feet. What could possibly motivate Him to do this? Love!

This 𝗦𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗻 was unlike any other son or daughter of man. Fully God and fully human, Jesus entered our physical existence, and experienced the joys and anguishes of being human, yet without sin. That's the beauty of the doctrine of incarnation: God invisible, glorious and untouchable took on flesh. For us.

Jesus' birth and life physically manifest a spiritual reality: God wants to be with his people. He created humans with this relationship in mind, breathing his own life into us, creating us in his own image, and placing within us souls so we communicate with Him. Sin has marred our relationship with Him, but Jesus'embodiment shows God's commitment to dwelling with His people.

This is mind-blowing when we think about it. God himself set aside his brilliance, took on human form and became one of us. He ate among us, cried, slept, and felt tired, angry, happy. He, the creator of the world, became as one of the created, because He longs to be with us. And he was willing to do whatever it took, even setting aside His glory, humbling himself to the point of death - on a cross - just to be with us forever. Amazing love!

A 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐝 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘴 for his sheep; he finds pastures with lush green grass that will give nutrients. He 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑠 his sheep; he watches them and knows what's wrong with them. A good shepherd 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘴 his sheep; he leads them and the sheep trusts him. Lots of hired shepherd would do this too. But the distinguishimg mark of a good shepherd is this: "𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐩 ". When danger comes, he does not run away to save his life.

This is our Good Shepherd. He does not have superficial or half hearted interest in us, he is competely committed to us- caring for us, knowing us, leading us and laying down his life for us. Betweeb continuing his own life and facing certain death, Jesus chose death. That's how much he loves us. Let us be comforted today by the presence of the good shepherd by our side.

For the Israelites, bread was considered a special food because of its religious connotations. In the tabernacle and later the temple, there was a table of showbread in the Holy Place that symbolized God’s desire to fellowship with His people as well as the bit of manna that was hidden in the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies as a symbol of God’s provision.

When Jesus used the phrases “𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲” and “bread … from heaven,” His listeners would have immediately thought of the story of manna. God gave manna to the traveling Israelites in the wilderness to save them from certain death by starvation. In a similar way, God gave Jesus into the world to save us from certain death by separation from Him.

And in the beautiful picture of Last supper, we are reminded that Jesus' broken body secures us a place in the Father's table. As a morsel of bread becomes a part of our body and gives us energy, so Jesus becomes part of us when we believe in Him and opens access to fellowship with God.

When John the Baptist is barely a week old, his father Zechariah is filled with the hope that accompanies new life. It is the hope of salvation for all people: Jews and Gentiles, insiders and outsiders, rich and poor, blind and lame, tax collectors and sinners, women and men, old and young, fishermen and farmers, Samaritans and soldiers, lepers and lawyers, and many others.

At this time of Advent, Zechariah’s song is very much ours. We see the faint light on the horizon, and we await the full, dazzling light of God’s incarnation in Jesus Christ. We find ourselves now in-between, standing in that moment of the already and the not-yet. The light has dawned but doesn’t seem yet to have reached the deepest darknesses inside and around us.

We may, with Zechariah, doubt that such a thing is possible. But also with Zechariah, we praise God for the dawn, seeing in it just the first shimmering of the peace in whose light we already bask, even as we wait for its full radiance.

During this season of Advent, as we await the birth of the Savior of the world, we can pray together with Zechariah, “𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱, 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝘀𝗿𝗮𝗲𝗹.”
