Did you know . . . that Kelly Woodlawn Church is having its final worship service in its building at 6955 S Martin Luther King Dr on Sunday, June 30th, 2024. Wait, what?
Beginning July 1, 2024, Kelly Woodlawn Church will join Englewood-Rust United Methodist Church and Freedom United Methodist Church to form the "House of Praise United Methodist Church." House of Praise UMC, under the leadership of Kelly Woodlawn's current pastor, Rev. Innis L. Miller, III, will have its inaugural worship service at 11:00am, Sunday, July 7th at 6400 S Stewart Av (in the facility that currently houses the Englewood-Rust congregation) less than 2 miles away.
On Sunday, June 30th, we will mark this momentous occasion with a celebratory worship service at 11:00am followed by a gospel concert at 1:00pm. We invite all to join our festivities.
We do plan to continue to maintain a presence and ministry in the Park Manor community. The Kelly Woodlawn Church building at 6955 King Dr and adjacent parsonage at 6953 S King Dr will belong to the House of Praise congregation and we expect to use the facility for various purposes yet to be determined.
One such purpose might be similar to the second installment of our "tent" ministry. In mid Spring, we pitched a tent in front of 6955 and manned it for hours, inviting people to stop and pray with us and to enter into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ our Lord or to deepen their existing relationship with God. We were deeply blessed by the response to this ministry so on June 29th we're doing it again!
From 10am to 2pm we will be out there again. This isn't about "church growth," this is about Jesus. We will continue to worship our Lord with whoever chooses to join us, even if in a different building. This tent ministry is because our children, Park Manor (our community), the city and indeed the whole world desperately needs Jesus.
We have wonderful partners in ministry in the Park Manor and West Woodlawn communities providing ample opportunities for those who do not wish to follow us "west of the Ryan." Parkway Gardens Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) right down the street at 6600 S King Dr offers powerful ministry and warm fellowship. And there is "The Park" aka Park Manor Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 600 E 73rd St which shares our goal of involvement in the community and "seeking to bring the community to Christ." Finally, The Congregation Church of Park Manor UCC has shared the "church corner" of 70th and King Drive for more than seventy years (see web link below). We hope that representatives from these churches will join us in this tent ministry.
