Gospel of the Day (Mark 6:1-6)

Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house."

Reflection:
Today's gospel reading tells of Jesus returning to his home town. People were so familiar with him that they couldn't comprehend his divine nature. Their perspective and lack of faith severely hindered their blessings.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, may we never treat your presence as a common thing. Thank you for the blessing of relationship with you. Grant that we may grow closer to you in faith and love. Amen.

Gospel of the Day (Mark 5:21-43)

She said, "If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured." Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

Reflection:
In today's gospel the woman received her healing while Jesus was on his way to heal someone else. God is never too busy to take care of us when we turn to Him.

Prayer:
Most Gracious God, thank you for your compassion. Grant us the strength to act according to our faith, fully trusting in your power to heal and save. Have mercy on us, we pray. Amen.

Memorial of Saint John Bosco
January 31st, 2025

Patron Saint of apprentices, boys, editors, laborers, magicians, students.

Saint John Bosco saw a need as he encountered troubled, imprisoned, poor, orphaned, but good-hearted young boys. He followed his inspiration not to be harsh with them, but to offer them loving discipline, friendship, education, skills to support themselves, and a family within his oratory. This loving concern for these young boys overflowed into the hearts of many others, and God used this saintly man to save the souls of many by raising up an army of workers to care for them.

Gospel of the Day (Mark 4:26-34)

"This is how it is with the Kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how."

Reflection:
The word of God is at work within us when we are receptive. It will cause us to grow and become fruitful.

Lord of the Harvest, cultivate our hearts and minds. Help us to grow into who you have called us to be. Amen.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Mark
Mk 4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples,
“Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.”

He also told them, “Take care what you hear.
The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

Reflection:
By what measure do I measure others? By what measure do I measure myself? Is it a generous measure, full of God's love, or is it a lowly measure?

Prayer:
Holy Father, touch our hearts that we may become more generous in grace, forgiveness, patience, and understanding. Help us to not withhold kindness and charity when it is in our power. Grant this by your grace we pray. Amen.

Gospel of the Day (Mark 4:1-20)

"The mystery of the kingdom of God has been granted to you. But to those outside everything comes in parables, so that 'they may look and see but not perceive, and hear and listen but not understand...'"

Reflection:
How do we receive the word of God? How do we respond?

Prayer:
Lord, let the seed of your word take root in our hearts that we may bring forth fruit worthy of you. Amen.

Memorial of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor of the Church
January 28th, 2025

By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of the Catholic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor.

His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings. The unity, harmony, and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural human knowledge, pervades his writings. One might expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent defender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, deep enough, to see the whole natural order as coming from God the Creator, and to see reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished.

"God has no need for our worship. It is we who need to show our gratitude for what we have received."
-Saint Thomas Aquinas

St. Thomas, pray for us.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Mark
Mk 3:31-35

The mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house.
Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him.
A crowd seated around him told him,
“Your mother and your brothers and your sisters
are outside asking for you.”
But he said to them in reply,
“Who are my mother and my brothers?”
And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother.”

Reflection:
Here I am, Lord. I come to do your will.

Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Feast Day of The Conversion of St. Paul

On January 25, the faithful celebrate the Conversion of St. Paul, one of the great events of the early Church.

The Conversion of St. Paul took place around A.D. 35 on the road to Damascus. Formerly known as Saul, he was a Pharisee zealous in persecuting early Christians. His life changed dramatically when a bright light from heaven knocked him to the ground and he heard the voice of Jesus asking, “Why do you persecute Me?” Blinded and shaken, Saul was led into Damascus, where he was healed by a disciple named Ananias. This profound encounter transformed Saul into Paul, one of the greatest missionaries and writers of the New Testament. He embarked on numerous missionary journeys, founded Christian communities throughout the Roman Empire, and authored epistles that continue to shape Christian theology and spirituality. His radical conversion and subsequent devotion exemplify how God’s grace can redirect even the most misguided life toward truth and purpose.

Prayer:
St. Paul, chosen instrument of Christ, pray for us that we may be open to God’s transforming grace in our lives. Obtain for us the courage to share our own stories of change and to use our gifts in service of the Gospel. Through your intercession, may we grow in faith, humility, and zeal for the love of Jesus. Amen.

Memorial of Saint Francis de Sales, Bishop and Doctor (1567–1622)
January 24, 2025

Patron Saint of authors, journalists, writers, deaf persons, educators.

St. Francis de Sales was born on August 21, 1567, and ordained to the priesthood in 1593. From 1594 to 1598 he labored at the difficult and dangerous task of preaching to the Protestants of Chablais and effected the return of some 70,000 souls to the Catholic faith.

St. Francis' ardent love of God and souls, his great kindliness, rare wisdom and sure teaching made him exceptionally influential in bringing about conversions and in guiding souls in the spiritual life.

Bishop de Sales was a very practical man, especially when it came to his theology. He believed that holiness was not reserved for those in the monastery or convent. He believed that everyone, in every state in life, within every occupation, was called to a life of sanctity.

His motto was “He who preaches with love, preaches effectively.”

Prayer:
Saint Francis de Sales, you became a true shepherd of your flock, tirelessly preaching the faith to them, calling them to repentance, exhorting them to embrace a life of prayer and virtue, and helping them to more fully love God by fulfilling His will in their lives. Please pray for me, that I may also respond to your preaching and may seek to become a saint within the context of the vocation I have been given. Saint Francis, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Mark
Mk 3:13-19

Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted and they came to him. He appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles,
that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach and to have authority to drive out demons:

He appointed the Twelve:
Simon, whom he named Peter; James, son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, whom he named Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder; Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus; Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean,
and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.

Reflection:
In baptism, through the Holy Spirit, we are also called to serve God and to do the work of the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth.

Prayer:
Gracious God, help us to live worthy of your calling, to seek and to do your will. Amen.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Mark
Mk 3:7-12

Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples.
A large number of people followed from Galilee and from Judea. Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem,
from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon.

He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him. He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him.

And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him and shout, “You are the Son of God.”
He warned them sternly not to make him known.

Reflection:
Each day we have an opportunity to choose to draw closer to Chist and to share in His good work.

Prayer:
Lord JesusChrist, we come to do your will. We are completely yours. Guide our ways and direct our paths as you see fit, that our lives may honor you. Amen.
