“Don’t Give Up on a Purposeful Life “
I will repay [“ restore to” NKJV] you for the years the locusts have eaten.”—Joel 2: 25
Are you still questioning what your life is about? I know it’s not easy to take a hard look at yourself, but it’s necessary if you’re going to discover your true purpose in life. You will be busy doing meaningful work when you learn why you are here. Even at twelve years of age, Jesus was busy with His purpose. (See Luke 2: 41–49.) Isn’t that an exciting way to live? Don’t give up on having a purposeful life, no matter what your age. Get busy with the right thing. I don’t have a “job” anymore, but I used to. I worked for the Bahamas government for twelve years. I taught junior high school for five years. I worked in a food store before that, packing shelves. I worked in a warehouse, lifting boxes. I worked in an ad firm, doing advertisements, drawings, and so forth. These were learning experiences. Then I found my true work of helping others understand how to manifest their God-given leadership potential. I don’t wake up in the morning and “go” to work. I wake up and become what God created me to be. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5: 16 KJV). When other people see your work, when they see you manifesting what God put into you, they will glorify God. You were born to do something so awesome that only God could get the credit for it. God desires that all people find their purpose and fulfill it. I once spoke about purpose at a church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A woman came up to me after the service and said, “I’m fifty-six years old, brother. Where were you fifty-six years ago?” I asked, “What do you mean?” She replied, “You’re the first person ever to come into my life and help me understand that I have a reason for living—and I can’t give an account for fifty-six years right now.” Sometimes, people begin to feel the way that woman did; they’re distressed because they’ve wasted so much time. If this is your situation, don’t be discouraged. One of the wonderful things about God is that He has a way of restoring the years that the locusts have eaten. (See Joel 2: 23–26.) When you go to Him, He knows how to make up for the time that you’ve lost. Yet God would prefer that we follow Him and know our purpose all our lives. That is why the Word of God says very strongly to young people, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth” (Ecclesiastes 12: 1). God wants you to remember the Manufacturer early so that He can set you on course for your entire life.
We have only one life, and we have to make that life count if we are ever to fulfill our purpose. Remember, a God-given purpose can be accomplished only through His guidance and strength. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3: 20). ***
