The Chetek & Dovre Lutheran Church has sung the Battle Hymn of the Republic every Sunday before Memorial Day for 37 years, and for good reason. Written in 1861 by abolitionist Julia Ward Howe, the Battle Hymn of the Republic became an anthem for Union soldiers fighting to end slavery. One line is particularly poignant: "As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free."
They knew they might die, but they did it anyway.
Whether they died fighting for the freedom of others, or supplying fellow soldiers, or defending their brothers and sisters in arms, or protecting innocent bystanders away from the battlefield, today we remember them.
"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." John 15:13
