This month, we begin a series of celebrations to commemorate 150 years as a parish in the Diocese of Wilmington. We started on October 5th with an Eucharistic Procession that began at the doors of the "old church," which will now be referred to as the Parish Life Center. We proceeded around the block and into the sanctuary.

Join the community of Saint John and Sacred Heart on Sunday for some Pit Beef and fun. It's our 70th year.

If I Only Had a Heart...

In October of 2024, Pope Francis issued his fourth encyclical, On the Human and Divine Love of the Heart of Jesus Christ and in Latin Dilexit Nos (He loved us).. Since our parish is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, this letter has particular interest and meaning. As we enter the month of June and prepare to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 27The Adult Faith Formation Committee will be presenting different ways for our parish to reflect on the Sacred Heart. Each week you will find excerpts from the Encyclical for your reflection His open heart has gone before us and waits for us unconditionally asking only to offer us his love and friendship. For he loved us first (cf 1 Jn;4:10) The heart is also the locus of sincerity, where deceit and disguise have no place. It usually indicates our true intentions, what we really think, believe and desire, the “secrets” that we tell no one; in a word, the naked truth about ourselves (DN, 5) Indeed, the men and women of our time often find themselves confused and torn apart, almost bereft of an inner principle that can create unity and harmony in their lives and actions . Models of behavior that sadly, are now widespread exaggerate our rational-technological dimension, or, on the contrary, that of our instincts. No room is left for the heart. (DN, 9) If we fail to appreciate the specificity of the heart, we miss the messages that the mind alone cannot communicate; we miss out on the richness of our encounters with other; we miss out on poetry. (DS, 13) For only the heart creates intimacy, true closeness between two persons. Only the heart is able to welcome and offer hospitality. Intimacy is the proper activity and the domain of the heart. (DN 12) …speaking of Our Lady, who saw things with the heart. She was able to dialogue with the things she experienced by pondering them in her heart , treasuring them in memory and viewing them in greater perspective (DN, 19) …in contemplating the meaning of our lives, perhaps the most decisive question we can ask is “Do I have a heart?” (DN, 23) Please plan on joining the parish to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart with Bishop Koenig and your brother and sister parishioners June 27, 5:30

God Bless our Pope

If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of all.

But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead came also through a human being.

For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life.
(1 Corinthians 15:19–22, NAB)

Lenten Scripture Discussion

SCRIPTURE DISCUSSION

Last week's discussion generated some interesting thoughts on the Transfiguration and how we were being challenged to really listen to Jesus, especially during this Lenten season.

Join us tomorrow morning from 10:00 am -11:30 am in the Parish Hall to read and discuss the Scriptures for the upcoming Sunday, March 23, the third Sunday of Lent.
