The Conservation of the Christopher Denroche Marker

In a landscape of replent of igneous and metaphoric markers, there is one unique Quercus Alba memorial for Christopher Denroche, rector from 1892 to 1906.

This white oak marker is unique today but in the early days of St Paul’s Churchyard, many graves were marked with wood memorials in the crucifix form as there was no local source of building stone. Marble and sandstone markers were shipped in as early as 1740s and granite markers after 1860s.

Over time the Denroche marker succumbed to deterioration and now requires replacement. The Churchyard Committee is working with Billy Hollingsworth, a Chestertown master craftsman on the reconstruction of the marker using Quercus Alba - white oak.

Thank you to Chip Lausman for prioritizing this marker and advocating for its restoration.

In 1999, when the Christian Education addition to the Parish Hall was dedicated and blessed, special commemorative tiles were given out to mark the occasion. Today we're sharing a photo of one of those keepsakes.

CHESTERTOWN — The new rector of St. Paul's, Kent Episcopal Church has deep roots in Kent County. His ancestor Michael Miller II donated the land for the original 1713 building.

This newspaper clipping from 1993 states that visitors were stopping by St. Paul’s Cemetery to pay their respects to Tallulah Bankhead 25 years after her passing. More than three decades later, that’s still true. In 2026, people continue to visit our historic cemetery specifically to see Tallulah’s final resting place.

We’re always glad to see people interested in the history of St. Paul’s and those laid to rest here. Out of respect for the deceased and their families, we ask that you review the policies posted at both entrances to the cemetery. We do not permit leaving trinkets or other items on any grave. Fresh cut flowers are welcomed.

100% of our beach collection goes to a local organization and your generosity made a real difference.

Over $600 was donated to the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company.
