Today is the feast day of St. Clare of Assisi. Clare was born into nobility, however felt a strong call to serve God. She was heavily influenced by the preaching of St. Francis and even spoke with him about her calling. Clare eventually left her home and went to visit Francis who helped her enter religious life.

Encouraged and with the help of Francis, Clare established an order, the Poor Ladies of San Damiano who would later be called the Poor Clares.
⁣
Among her patronages, St. Clare is the patron of embroiderers, goldworkers, laundry workers and needleworkers. Her intercession is invoked by those suffering from eye diseases and for good weather.

Today is the feast day of St. Lawrence. He was a Roman martyr and deacon of the Church.

Tradition holds that Lawrance’s life was to be spared by the Roman emperor Valerian if Lawrence would bring the treasures and valuables of the Church to the emperor. After giving them away to the poor, Lawrence brought all the poor, widowed, orphaned, and hungry to the ruler saying, “These are the treasures of the church.”
⁣
For this, he was grilled to death. While dying he famously said, “I am cooked on that side; turn me over.”
⁣
He is the patron of cooks, comedians, deacons, and firefighters.
⁣

Today is the feast day of St. Dominic.
⁣
Dominic was a contemplative priest who did active mission work. He lived in Spain from 1170-1221 and spent his days fighting heresy.
⁣
Specifically, he fought against an Albigensian heresy that saw all physical matter as evil, inherently denying Jesus as being the physical the Son of God and the sacraments. He was part of a preaching crusade that changed the minds of ordinary people.
⁣
His fellow preachers later formed a religious order known as the Dominicans (the Order of Preachers).
⁣
He is the patron of astronomers, natural scientists, and the falsely accused.
⁣

The Transfiguration is an important event in the Gospels that reveals Jesus as the Son of God. With Peter, James, and John, Jesus went up a mountain to pray.

Today is the feast day of St. John Vianney.

John grew up in a devout Catholic household, which influenced his desire to become a priest. He faced educational challenges in his journey to ordination as he struggled with learning Latin and theology.
⁣
Vianney was well known for being a great confessor as he possessed a special grace in administering the sacrament.
He often spent 11 to 16 hours a day in the confessional.
⁣
He died on August 4, 1859, and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925 and is the patron of parish priests.
⁣
