My role as a mother has changed fairly significantly over the past few years as my daughters have entered the tween and teen stage. Some aspects of mothering have become way easier and some are way more complicated. 😬

But through these big changes I’ve realized that a mother’s work is truly never done… not just in the sense that it always feels like there are a million things on the to-do list (which we all feel!) but also in the sense that children always need their mother, no matter how grown-up they get.

I love that there is a designated day to honor the role that mothers play in our lives, whether they’re still living or not, biological, adoptive, foster or just nurturers by nature. To all the women who give hugs, offer a listening ear and steady support… happy mother’s day! The world is better because we have mothers like you. 🧡

You don't have to be enough.

You don't have to know the right thing to do.

You don't have to be an expert.

You don't have to have all the answers.

You aren't the one holding everything together.

It doesn't have to be perfect.

It's OK to be disappointed.

It's OK to wonder, "how?"

I'm sure the Israelites wondered "How in the world are you going to do this, Lord?" when they faced the Red Sea on one side and the armies of the Egyptians on the other. But God did it...in a way they would never have dreamed possible. I can't help but think that God is going to show up for you, too, mom. I don't know what to expect, but I know we can expect Him to make a way, to be enough.

You don't have to be enough, my friend. Why? Because Jesus already is. He's in control. Give it all to Him.

Our kids are listening.

They hear you talk about what you really think about their school teacher.

They know what you say about their aunt when you leave the family gathering.

They know what you think about someone who looks or acts differently because they heard the way you giggled or sneered about that person in the grocery store.

You can read all the books on kindness to them. You can talk their ear off on the value of kindness. But when they hear you judge and shame, gossip or ridicule, you’re normalizing it for them. You are teaching them that it is OK.

Kids don’t learn how to tease or bully in a vacuum. Gossip, disrespect or cruelty don’t come naturally. They are learned behaviors. And many of them learn it in their very own home.

Because our kids are listening.
