From Upper Room To Outer World
Pentecost was not God empowering believers to stay in the upper room, it was God empowering believers to empty the upper room. Pentecost was never the destination. Pentecost was the launch. The upper room was not the finish line, it was the starting line. Jesus said, “You shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me.” The purpose of Pentecost was not merely to fill believers with the Spirit, but to send Spirit-filled believers into the world. The first thing the early Church did after receiving power was not build programs, conferences, or stay gathered together. They preached Christ. Souls were saved. Disciples were made.
The biblical pattern is simple. Power leads to witness which leads to souls, which leads to disciples, which leads to church growth, then ultimately to multiplication. Soul winning is participating with God in bringing people from spiritual death toward salvation through gospel proclamation, prayer, persuasion, demonstration, and discipleship. The mission after Pentecost is still the mission today, to win souls, make disciples, teach obedience and raise up witnesses. If we believe eternity is real, silence becomes difficult to justify. The question is not merely, “Did we experience God?” The question is who experienced God because we were filled?”
