We invite your family to join us this Sunday at 10:30 as we celebrate Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. All are welcome!

During the service, children will be invited to participate in a special palm parade as our band plays music remembering Jesus’s arrival in Jerusalem.

Activity bags will be available for children in preschool through 5th grade to use during worship, and our nursery will be open for children ages 0–2.

We hope to see you there as we begin this special week together!

Jesus in the Synagogue – Luke 4:14-30
(Lesson excerpt from Celebrate Wonder Winter Session 8.)

Prepare to Wonder

Synagogues are places of worship for Jewish people. In Jesus’ time, Jewish people gathered together in the synagogue for worship and for teaching the Scriptures and the law. After Jesus’ baptism and his experience being tempted in the wilderness, Jesus began to teach in the synagogues. The Bible tells us it was Jesus’ custom to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath. Jesus’ visit to the synagogue in Nazareth is significant for two reasons: because Nazareth was his hometown and because of the Scripture Jesus read that day.

During worship in a Jewish synagogue at that time, there were usually several readers. Each would read a part of Scripture and then preach on the text. The Bible tells us Jesus stood to read from the scroll and then sat down to teach. This was the customary practice at the time. Jesus read a passage that essentially announced what his ministry was to be about: bringing good news to the poor, proclaiming release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind. It could be said that Jesus was reading his mission statement.

The last part of the story is more difficult to understand. The crowd in the synagogue turns on Jesus. In verse 22, we are told they are amazed at the words that he spoke. In verse 29, they are attempting to hurl him off a cliff! It has been speculated that the crowd became upset when Jesus insisted his message was for everyone. The people of Nazareth may have wanted Jesus to spend extra time in Nazareth and were upset when this was not Jesus’ plan.

This month we are talking about stories from Jesus’ life. Our story today is about Jesus being in the synagogue. It was like the church where we come to worship and learn about God. Turn to Luke in your bible and read together chapter 4 verses 14 through 30.

After reading, complete reproducible 8A (preschool), 8B (young elementary), or 8C (older elementary).

Wonder together

How do you think Jesus felt when he walked into the synagogue?
What do you think it was like for the people to see someone they knew stand up and read scripture?
Why do you think Jesus read this scripture?
What does it mean to be faithful?
Why do you think the same words made the people amazed and then angry?
What do you think the people hoped Jesus would do for them?
How can we share good news in our church or community?
How might God be inviting us to love in a bigger way than we expected?

Spiritual Practice

Spiritual practice is something we do to help us connect to God. This month we are learning about journey, following where God leads us. We are hearing stories about Jesus’ journey. Today Jesus goes to the synagogue to worship God. Take a prayer walk around your house. As you walk, notice the things around you that remind you of your community. Pray to God about what you see. If you notice something you’d like to share, tell your family what stands out to you.

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for spaces where we can feel Your presence and worship You. Bless us to feel you near as we journey through our day today. Amen.

Snow Day Lesson

With In-person worship canceled today, weve adapted a short lesson to do at home. ❄️

Scripture

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” - 1 Corinthians 12:27

Start by explaining to your child that this lesson will explore how we are all unique, just like snowflakes, and how those differences contribute to something bigger.

Alike and Unalike Game

1. Grab some colorful paper

2. Tell your child that you'll be playing a game called "Alike and Unalike" where they will identify similarities and differences between the two of you.

3. Suggestions:
Eye Color: Ask, “What color are your eyes?” Stand together or mark a spot for each trait.
Hair Color: “What color is your hair?”
Favorite Color: “What’s your favorite color?"
Siblings: “How many siblings do you have?”
Age: “How old are you?”

Discussion: After you've gone through several categories, discuss how God made each of us unique. Ask them what makes them special and encourage them to think about their personality traits, skills, and likes.

Biblical Background

Read Genesis 1:27: “So God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.”

Discuss: Talk about how God is a creator and how He made each of us different for a reason.

Sensory Time: Snow Exploration

Bundle up and head outside to explore the snow together.

Questions for Reflection
What do you see in the snow?
How does it feel?
How many snowflakes do you think it took to cover a tree branch?

After your exploration, read 1 Corinthians 12:27 again. Discuss how we all work together like snowflakes to create community.

Craft: Unique Self-Portraits

1. Materials: Get a piece of construction paper and white chalk or crayons.

2. Activity: Have your child draw a self-portrait and write down things that make them unique around the image.

3. Display: Afterward, have your child hang it on the fridge as a reminder of God's creation.

Discussion Questions:

1. In whose image are we created?
2. What does unique mean?
3. Why did God make us all unique?
4. What kinds of differences can you think of in people?
5. Can we do more when we work alone or together?
6. What can we accomplish together in our family or community?

Prayer

“Dear God, thank you for making everyone unique and special. Help us remember our differences are valuable. Guide us to work together to do great things for Your kingdom. Amen.”

Our church aims to gently guide young hearts and minds to respond to the world with empathy, kindness, and compassion, even in the face of unimaginable news.

We believe in the power of stories as a means to encourage understanding and inspire action. Through literature, we can guide our children to recognize the struggles and triumphs of others. We encourage parents to explore these resources to instill Christ-like values in our children.

Stories that promote empathy and understanding about the immigrant experience:

"Inside Out and Back Again" by Thanhha Lai
"Dreamers" by Yuyi Morales
“The Name Jar" by Yangsook Choi

Books about helping others in their communities experiencing hardship:

“The Name of This Book Is Secret" by Pseudonymous Bosch
“The Can Man" by Laura E. Williams
“Those Shoes" by Maribeth Boelts

To explore themes of compassion and kindness:

"Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud
"The Invisible Boy" by Trudy Ludwig

For inspiring children to engage in social action and help others in their communities:

"A Safe Place" by Rachael Wright
"Lola Plants a Garden" by Anna McQuinn
"One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Women of The Gambia" by Miranda Paul
