Watch is the word of the Day.
We are all familiar with our responsibility to stand the watch and we are accustomed to fulfill these duties within our respective official functions. Today, I want to encourage you with the importance of standing the watch in your daily lives in three ways. If we don’t choose to be watchful, we will miss the glories of this world that surrounds us. One of the important facets of life that we quickly forget is that today is only a day long. As tomorrow becomes today, it brings with it new mercies, new beauty, new opportunity. Be watchful of all that today brings.
If we don’t choose to be watchful, we may miss what we are doing or saying to someone else. How much can be done by a single word! For good or ill, we can transform another’s life by what we choose to say or by a careless word cast off. Let us be watchful of ourselves, that we speak slowly and with compassion.
If we don’t choose to be watchful, we may miss what others are telling us. We know that many of us are walking around in extraordinary pain and stress. It may be that your neighbor, shipmate, friend or loved one is crying out to you. It can result in lifelong joy to by simple intentional presence stand as a heroic light in someone’s darkness. You can do this; it costs you nothing – merely watching. Friends, we do not stand relieved; we have the watch. Watch is the word of the day.

The word of the day is Hope. Recently we received a briefing on the shooting that occurred at VB's City in May of last year. As I reflect on what we heard in that briefing, I can't help but believe that if we merely hope that something like that would not happen to us, we are truly fools. I'm reminded of the apocryphal expression: "hope is not a strategy." By this, I perceive that we mean that through the act of hoping we cannot accomplish the content of our hopes. Now, hope is absolutely essentially for our existence. If you doubt this point, you might read the book 'Unbroken,' which details the experience of Louie Zamperini, an Olympic runner and B-24 navigator during his captivity in a Japanese POW camp through much of WWII. Hope is indispensable for us, especially when confronted by darkness. Now hoping refers to our capacity to look forward and perceive a future that is improved over our current experiences or reasonable expectations. But the simple act of hoping can no more realize our desires than day dreaming can achieve our dreams. Instead, by faith we believe that we can realize our hopes. By strategy, we plan to implement our faith. By action we implement and execute our strategy. And by our faithful day-by-day faithful activity, we eventually see our hopes as reality. Hope is the word of the day. Let us not hope less but the more.
