UKRAINIAN SIGN IN THE VATICAN: A HISTORY THAT OVERCAME PROHIBITIONS
In the very center of the Catholic world, under the majestic vaults of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where every stone breathes with centuries-old history, there is a special place. Here, among the masterpieces of world art, there is one unspoken but strict rule: it is forbidden to place state emblems of other countries in the basilica. ⛪
However, an exceptional exception was made for Ukraine. If you get to the altar of St. Erasmus, you will see there what makes the heart of every Ukrainian beat faster - our golden trident on a blue background. 🇺🇦
This symbol of millennial statehood is not just a decoration. It is integrated into the mosaic images of Saints Volodymyr and Olga, which adorn the altar on both sides. ✨
The appearance of the Ukrainian coat of arms in the Vatican is not a coincidence, but the result of far-sighted “spiritual diplomacy” and incredible foresight of one person.
The story began in 1988, when the world was preparing to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Ukraine-Rus. At that time, Ukraine was still in the grip of the Soviet Union, where the trident was considered a “dangerous nationalist symbol,” and for its depiction the KGB could break life. ⚠️
But across the ocean, in the USA, the bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Bishop Vasyl Losten, had a different vision.
He believed: “I really wanted our people to work, unite, and thus have an impact on American political life. I wanted us to hold ourselves strong, so that our borders were inviolable, and no one had an impact on our people. Because our people are the largest and strongest in Europe. Without Ukrainians, Europe does not exist.” 💬
On August 17, 1988, Bishop Vasyl wrote a bold letter to Archbishop Lino Zanini, who was then in charge of the historical monuments of the Holy See. Losten offered to donate two mosaics to the basilica — St. Volodymyr and St. Olga. 📜
He entrusted the coordination of this complex artistic and political project to his longtime friend, the world-famous Professor Ugo Mazzei.
It was Mazzei who developed the drawings, which were later worked on by the best masters of the Vatican Studio under the leadership of Professor Virgilio Cassio. 🎨
Fate presented this initiative with several amazing coincidences.
The bishop received a positive response from the Vatican on August 24, 1988 — exactly three years before this day became the main holiday of restored Ukrainian Independence. The work lasted exactly a year, and in August 1989, the oval-shaped mosaic measuring 140 by 80 centimeters took its place of honor near the altar of St. Erasmus. ⏳
The princely sign is clearly visible on the mosaic of St. Volodymyr - a golden trident. The Vatican perceived it as a personal symbol of the baptist of Rus, which allowed it to circumvent the ban on state symbols. ✝️
However, for Ukrainians, who in those years were just beginning their open path to freedom, it was a powerful signal.
When the People's Movement was just being created in Kyiv, the Ukrainian coat of arms was already officially shining in the heart of the Christian world. 🌟
Vladimir Vasyl Losten, whom his friends called "the strength of spirit," wanted Ukrainians to hold themselves strong, and our borders to be inviolable.
His gift is a silent response to all those who try to rewrite the past, a reminder that Ukrainian identity was not invented yesterday and is not subject to revision or annexation, that Ukraine is not a “territory”, not a “project”, but a state with a history that is deeper than all Russian myths combined. 🛡️
Today, these mosaics in St. Peter’s Cathedral are a reminder to the world elite and millions of pilgrims that Ukrainian identity has roots much deeper than any imperial myths.
This is evidence that Ukraine is an integral part of the great European Christian family, recorded in stone and smalt by Professor Mazzei at the behest of the great Ukrainian Vasyl Losten. 🏛️
Even if the chapel is sometimes closed to ordinary tourists, the very fact of the presence of the trident in the main cathedral of Catholicism remains a symbol of our indestructibility.
This is a thousand-year-old code, which, thanks to the courage of the diaspora and the skill of Italian artists, is now forever inscribed in the Vatican. 🔱
