THEME IDEAS
Worship on Holy Thursday invites God’s people to take a first step into the terror, mystery, and exaltation of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The readings reverberate with ritual. We hear the foundational stories for the feasts of the Passover and Unleavened Bread, the institution of Holy Communion, and the new commandment that we love one another as Jesus loves us. As worshipers, we are expected to know, remember, and even lean into the context of these stories—the coming Exodus, the imminent crucifixion, and the disciples’ unfolding betrayal and abandonment. The Triduum invites us to go beyond observing a ritual or hearing an old, old story. As we make these solemn days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday our own stories, we journey with Christ toward Easter.
CENTERING WORDS (based on John 13:1-17, 31b -35)
Jesus loves those who are his own and loves them till the end.
We belong to Jesus. We are his own.
