What is Sin
One day I was having a conversation with a friend about the gospel of Christ and he asked me “what is sin?” Looking at the scripture for an answer I will start in the book of Ezekiel 28:13-19 as we see the covering cherub Lucifer who was created perfect in all his ways until “iniquity was found in him” for he said in his heart “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the North. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High (Isaiah 14:12-14). And by the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled thee with violence, and thou has sinned (Ezekiel 28:16).
After looking at the scripture we see that iniquity, sin, unrighteousness was found in the serpent, so sin is the nature of the serpent and it is in the heart (Isaiah 14:13). Remember throughout this message that sin is the nature of the serpent and it is in the heart.
In the book of Genesis 1:26-27 we see that God made man in his likeness and image and gave man dominion over creation. God told Adam in Genesis 2:16-17 that for every tree of the garden they could eat freely, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shall not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. In the Hebrew word die it means dying thou shall die, it is an eternal death.
Going forward in Genesis 3: 1-5 we see the serpent comes to Eve questioning what God said concerning of eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The serpent tells Eve that if she eats of this tree that she won’t die: for God doth know that in the day you eat thereof your eyes will be opened and you shall be as gods, knowing both good and evil. This is what is seen in Ezekiel 28:18 “by the iniquity of thy traffick” meaning he is selling a lie and making merchandise out of Adam and Eve. As a result Adam and Eve trusted the lie of the serpent and iniquity entered their hearts and they lost the image of God and received the nature of the serpent, which is sin in the heart and he would not let them go for they sold themselves to a lie. In Isaiah 14:17 “made the world a wilderness and open not the house of his prisoner’s”. The serpent (devil) sold Adam and Eve the same iniquity saying you shall be as gods, and it is so with man as he decides what is good and what is evil, but this becomes self righteousness.
Humanity become the collateral damage in this war between satan and God, but nevertheless when Adam and Eve trusted in the lie and sin was conceived in the heart, which is the nature of the devil, they become the enemies of God (Romans 5:11) and are children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3). Now mankind is a slave to sin, unrighteousness and they will do the desire of the one who they sold out too. Jesus told the Pharisee’s in John 8:44 “you are of your father the devil and the desire of your father you will do.” Also, the testimony of the Apostle Paul before he was saved in Romans 7:14-18 he speaks of wanting to keep the laws of God, but the harder he tries the worse he gets. Finally coming to conclusion it is sin in the heart and he is unable to do the good he wants.
The purpose of God stands meaning what He purposed in the beginning (Genesis 1: 26-27) is having people in His image and likeness. The day that sin entered into humanity God promised that the seed (Jesus) of the woman (Mary) would bruise the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15). This One who would come and bruise the head of the serpent is no ordinary man, for this is the Word, the eternal Christ who would take upon flesh, this is the One who was in the beginning and is the beginning. Humanity could not free themselves from the sin in the heart (nature of the serpent). The Hebrew people made a daily sacrifice every day by scarifying a lamb in the morning and one in the evening and on the day of atonement hundreds of thousands were sacrificed, but this blood could only wash the outside of the cup. So we see in Hebrews 10: 1-7 that the blood of bulls and goats could not take away sin, so we read in Hebrews 10:5 “sacrifice and offering you would not, but a body you prepared for me (Jesus). Seeing the eternal Word emptied himself and took on flesh for the purpose of dying on a cross. In Romans 6:2-7 we see that we were crucified with Christ Jesus and buried with him, putting to death that old Adamic man, but more than the death of the old man is the precious blood that flowed from the body of Jesus Christ washed us on the inside: though your sins be as scarlet, thy shall be white as snow. Jesus suffered outside the gate to sanctify the people (to make them holy).
In the book of Revelation 12:10-11 “and I heard a loud voice in heaven, now is com salvation, and strength, and the Kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb. 1John 3:8 “He that commits sin is of the devil for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
What is sin? Sin is the nature of the devil and is found in the heart. Jesus said in John 8:33-36 that he that commits sin is a slave to sin, but if the Son shall make you free you shall be free indeed.
