SUMMER 2022=134thANNIVERSARY YEAR

The Institution’s strong desire for increased income has been very successful with three consecutive sell outs at the Amp, first for the Avett Brothers and then for back to back nights with Laufey. Of course, that means that tonight’s Sacred Song Service gets moved to 6pm and away from its home in the Amp with the organ for Josh to end it with the Largo. Sad but a reflection of the world at large I guess.

We have had several outstanding chaplains for weeks 1 , 2 and 3 and the two shown here for weeks 4 and 5 are eagerly awaited by many. They are as I am sure you know Rev. Natalie Hanson and her husband Rev. J. Paul Womack. They will be staying here with us at the United Methodist House and we hope many of their friends and admirers will stop by to visit. Paul’s sermon on July 12 is “By the Grace of God, Be a Who (With An Apology to Dr. Seuss). Natalie’s on the 19th is “Living the Question”. Later in the week on Tuesday at noon on the porch Paul will ask “Is Empathy a Sin?” and a week later also on the porch Natalie will ask “Why Is It So Hard to Talk About Hard Stuff?”.

Week 1 has started! The Saturday guests will arrive soon and many are likely looking forward to the first 10:45 lecture in the Amp featuring the two folks in the picture. I expect a large crowd and an appropriate security process.

The Denominational Houses meeting the week before Day 1 was, as usual, held in our chapel. There was a good turnout and the Department of Religion was well represented and very helpful. Bishop Sutton practiced some of the jokes (puns) he told the next day at the Luncheon the Departmrnt of Religion put on for the Denominational/Houses.

The United Methodist House is ready (almost) to receive Week 1 guests to the 2925 CHQ season. The Annual Meeting will again be during Week 3–at 4 pm Wednesday July 9th. United Methodists and others who have made contributions to the House in the last year are voting members and are invited to attend. A vote will be taken at the meeting to amend the BYLAWs, so please plan to attend if possible. See you on the porch!😀😀

We may have set a record of sorts this week. Bill McKibben swung by our chapel after speaking at the 10:45 amp lecture. He is the founder of Third Act —an environmental advocacy organization that promotes people over 60 to rally to support save the planet. Our chapel seats about 80 when full but for this meeting more than 130 folks showed up to listen to what was billed as a 5 minute quick stop and became a 45 minute talk with many Qs and As. The parlor served as an overflow room. United Methodist Hospitality was very much appreciated by all who attended.

There have been many amazing performances in the Amp so far this summer but one that stands out to me was Beethoven’s Ode to Joy (his 9th symphony) with the CSO conducted by Russian Milano and sung by the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus.

Our Connection students this year are both viola players. Katya is from Russia and Adrian is from San Francisco. By sitting in the front row of the Choir loft we had a great view watching them play.
