The Chautauqua Cemetery is operated by the Chautauqua Cemetery Association, P.O. A board of local residents oversees the cemetery with President Sylvia Faust and Cemetery Superintendent David Beeson. The first burials occurred in 1823 but the cemetery continues today in a well-maintained and lovely country setting located on Route 394 (4949 W. Lake Road, Mayville) between Chautauqua Institution

and the Village of Mayville. Nearly 2,000 lots are filled in the Cemetery, but hundreds remain for sale at the cost of $400 per lot. Beeson may be reached at 716-357-4001 for information.

A funeral with a large family at the cemetery will prevent us from holding our annual cemetery cleanup meeting this morning. All are welcome to clean graves this afternoon.

The annual meeting of the cemetery board will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at the Hurlburt Church on the Grounds of Chautauqua Institution on the lower level of the church. The public is welcome.

Unfortunately, we are canceling our Memorial Day picnic at the Cemetery, which we usually hold on the Federal holiday. Feel free to visit the cemetery that afternoon.

Winter continues in Chautauqua County with lots of snow on the ground but temperatures "rising" into the 20s! Dunkirk Dave, our local groundhog, says we'll have an early spring. We'll take that instead of Phil's prediction of 6 more weeks of winter!
