Why was this included? That question can take your Bible study to a deeper level.

When you study a passage, ask:

Why did the author include this event or teaching?
Why was this given so much—or so little—space?
Why did this happen?

Sometimes the answer is stated directly in the text. In John 7:1, we’re told exactly why Jesus remained in Galilee: “because the Jews were seeking to kill him.”

Other times, you have to observe what surrounds the passage and look for clues to the author’s purpose.

John even tells us why he selected the signs recorded in his Gospel: so that we would believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in His name.

The “why” question can be one of the hardest to answer—but it can also lead to some of the most rewarding discoveries.

Don’t just ask what the Bible says. Ask why the author included it.

Can you spot the patterns in Matthew 6? 👀

This is Matthew 6:1–4, where Jesus addresses giving to the needy and teaches the exact same warning each time. Read it first and see if you can spot the patterns. 

Jesus names hypocrites three times in this chapter, once for each practice. Mark the word itself, then mark the pronouns (they, their) that point back to them in the surrounding verses. Watching where a key word’s pronouns travel is its own kind of observation. 

Now circle the verse numbers that contain a direct instruction: do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, go into your room and shut the door, anoint your head and wash your face. Circling instruction verses makes obedience easy to find later. 

Three different practices, one repeated warning: do not perform your faith for an audience. What is one place you can guard your heart against doing the right thing for the wrong audience this week?

Where did this happen? 🌍

When you’re studying Scripture, don’t overlook the locations. Asking “Where?” can reveal context, conflict, and even purpose.

In John 7:1, Jesus is in Galilee—not Judea. That distinction matters. Judea was where hostility toward Jesus was concentrated, while He could still move about more freely in Galilee.

And throughout the Gospels, geography often sets the stage for what happens next. In John 4, Jesus passes through Samaria and encounters the Samaritan woman. In John 2, Cana becomes the setting for the beginning of Jesus’ signs.

So when you see a place mentioned, don’t just move on. Look it up. Study the location. Ask why this happened here.

Sometimes knowing where something happened helps unlock why it happened there.

It’s possible to do the right thing for the wrong reasons.

In Matthew 6, Jesus gets straight to the heart of our motives. Giving, praying, and fasting can all look “spiritual” on the outside while our hearts are seeking recognition from others.

So how do we pursue a faith that is authentic—not performative?

In Season 7, Episode 3 of *Know God Deeply*, we continue through the Sermon on the Mount and explore what Jesus says about practicing righteousness, guarding our hearts against hypocrisy, and cultivating a relationship with God that goes deeper than appearances.

It's possible to know a lot about the Bible.....and still miss its purpose.

Scripture wasn't given to simply increase our knowledge—it was given to transform our lives.

That's why application is an essential part of the Precept Bible Study Method.

After observing what the text says and understanding what it means, we ask the question: How should this change the way I live?

Because God's Word isn't meant to stay on the page. It's meant to shape our hearts, renew our minds, and change the way we walk with Him.

As James reminds us, we're called to be doers of the Word—not hearers only.

When did this happen? Sometimes the answer to that question reveals more than you expect.

When studying a passage, look for time markers that tell you when something happened, when it happened in relation to what came before, or what hasn’t happened yet.

In John 7:1, the words “after this” point us backward—to the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus’ teaching about the bread of life, and the disciples who turned away. That context helps us understand what’s happening as Jesus moves through Galilee.

And in John 3, Nicodemus comes to Jesus “by night.” That detail matters. John repeatedly uses the imagery of light and darkness, so even a seemingly small time reference can carry significant meaning.

Don’t skip over the time markers. When something happens—and when it doesn’t—can reveal what the text is communicating.

What is happening in this passage? That’s the next question to ask when you’re studying Scripture.

What are the main events? What are the major teachings? What is the author talking about? And what is his purpose in saying it?

In John 3, the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus is on the surface about being “born again.” But keep asking what and you begin to uncover more:
What does Jesus say the new birth requires?
What does Nicodemus misunderstand?
What is Jesus actually teaching?

And when you connect those observations to John’s stated purpose in John 20:30–31, you begin to see how the purpose of the whole book shapes the way you read each individual chapter.

Don’t just ask what happened. Ask what the text is actually communicating.
