my advice to incoming freshman would be to get rid of any and all expectations and pressures that you’ve placed on yourself coming into college. let go of the pressure to be perfect, to fulfill some imaginary standard of what a perfect dorm, perfect friend group, straight A’s, social media posts, etc. look like. the best things that have come from my time at Lee have come as a result of disappointments. one door closed, and the Lord opened an even better one that I couldn’t have possibly dreamed of. I just want to encourage you all to trust in the Lord’s timing and His plans, because He is working in and through you to bring forth the most beautiful story for your life. if you try so hard to do everything on your own instead of taking time to rest, breathe, and sit in His presence each day, you will be absolutely drained of all of your energy and joy. let His word fill you and sustain you. take time to notice the little things — a smile from a hall-mate, a message in small group, worship in chapel, a note from your RA, or even something as simple as the flowers blooming around campus. there is so much beauty in the ordinary, and Jesus wants to be part of every minute of your life. His love is enough, and you don’t need to feel like you have to measure up to someone else’s or even your own standards. you got this!!

“sink deeply into the world as it stands. breathe in the smell of rain and the scuff of leaves as they scrape across driveways on windy nights. this is where life is, not in some imaginary, photo-shopped dreamland. here. now. you, just as you are. me, just as I am. this world, just as it is. this is the good stuff. this is the best stuff there is. perfect has nothing on truly, completely, wide-eyed, open-souled present.” - shauna niequist, “present over perfect”
