This past Sunday, Pastor Josh walked us through James 3 and reminded us, your words aren’t just habits to manage. They’re revealing what’s going on within your heart.
Here are 5 ways to put this into practice:
1- Go after the root, not just the words.
When something comes out wrong, don’t stop at “I shouldn’t have said that.” Ask instead: “Why did that come out of me like that?” What’s underneath it: pride, anger, insecurity, entitlement? You then have a place to ask God to work within you.
2- Don’t underestimate your everyday speech.
It’s not just the big blowups that matter. It’s the normal conversations, the tone, the sarcasm, the comments you barely think about. James reminds us small things can steer big directions.
3- Use your words to give life.
Look for one or two people this week you can intentionally build up. Not flattery, not vague encouragement, but something specific that lifts, steadies, or strengthens them.
4- Slow down your reactions.
Most damage doesn’t come from long thought-out statements, it comes from impulse. A text sent too fast, a comment said in frustration, a joke that goes too far. Pause long enough for wisdom to catch up.
5- Bring it to God, not just behavior change.
Trying harder isn’t enough. Ask God to show you what’s underneath your speech and let Him deal with that level. Because changed words only come from a changed heart.
