Thorne Sparkman School of Religion

Thorne Sparkman School of Religion Please join us for Thorne Sparkman School of Religion every year during Lent! The Thorne Sparkman School began during Lent 1974, the brainchild of the Rev.

John H. Bonner (1919-1993), who was rector of St. Paul’s from 1956 until 1985. He felt that because of its unique role as a downtown parish, St. Paul’s should be offering other Episcopal churches and the community “the best in Christian education, in music, in drama, in ethics, in counseling, in medical ethics, governmental concerns, etc.”

The series was named in honor of the Rev. Thorne Sparkma

n (1904-1988), who was rector of St. Paul’s from 1938 until 1949. Because of his strong intellectual bent, “it was natural to think of his ministry as being a teaching ministry —and my concept of the School fitted that pattern.”
