Last night on Solid Food we had a discussion about the importance of apologizing to our kids for our mistakes and any ways we may have hurt them. Children need to see good communication skills modeled. They need to see grace, mercy and forgiveness in action. I love the graphic below because it opens the lines of communication.

In line with Monday's Solid Food episode on Parents and Back to School, here is a little piece of advice from my years as a counselor. Parents as you prepare to pick up the kids from their first day/week of school remember that anything your child shares with you is a big deal. The story about the rock they found on the playground is just as important as what happened in science. Ask open ended questions. Actively listen and engage with them. Put down the devices and give them your undivided attention. Let them know that you see them and you hear them. Kids want to feel safe, known and loved. Just as we can go to our Heavenly Father with what's on our hearts, kids need to know they can come to us with what's on theirs.

It's natural to reflect on our past decisions especially parents. As a counselor, I have seen people become stuck on the decisions and mistakes they have made as parents. Not allowing the grace to forgive themselves for the decision they made at the time. Sometimes you have to understand that you did the best that you could with what you knew to do at the time. As you have begun to heal and grow, now you can see different perspectives, different choices and you now have different tools to tackle problems. That's called growth and maturity. The hardest person to forgive sometimes is ourselves. But the heart of the little girl or little boy inside each of us needs to hear you forgive yourself for the harsh way you treated your own heart. We need to ask God to reconcile and restore our broken hearts. God has already forgiven you and reconcilled with you when you accepted Jesus. He gave us the beautiful gift and ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:16-21). It's time that you forgive yourself and come home Beloved.

The power of life and death is in the tongue. Speak life.

Have you ever done something and say to yourself I can hear my mama fussing now? Why is that? Many times we associate our inner critic with our parents voice especially if you grew up in a home where encouraging words were few and far between. In my counseling sessions, I see men and women who are operating on the negative words spoken over them by a parent or authority figure. They have internalized the negative words, the lies, the dasher of hopes and dreams and are walking around defeated with their heads held down. The Bible says that life and death is in our tongues (Proverbs 18:21). But what if we switched this and spoke life over our children. Speak encouraging words to them so they associate that inner voice with life. Even better what if we spoke the word of God over them. There is nothing better than hearing how proud and how loved and how important you are to someone. So let's motivate and encourage our children. Speak life to one another. Let's change the narrative. It's not too late to start.
