THE QUESTION BEHIND VIRAL ACTS OF KINDNESS

Call it performative service. With YouTube and social media, we've all seen this trend take off.

MrBeast, one of the biggest YouTubers in the world, has paid for thousands of cataract surgeries, built clinics for children rescued from slavery, and built hundreds of wells in Africa. All of it is content.

Other creators ask strangers for gas money or pose as a blind man begging. Whoever helps walks away with thousands of dollars, a business fund, or even a home, set to music that pulls on our heartstrings.

Good really does happen here. If you had cataracts and now you can see, or had no clean water and now you do, that's real good, and it shouldn't be dismissed.

Critics have asked MrBeast if his giving comes from moral duty or the clicks. He says it's about doing good. Then why not just do it and never film it?

The Bible calls us to be people who give without recognition, to serve as Jesus did.

OVERWHELMED BY HOW MUCH GOOD YOU SHOULD BE DOING?

Serving others is simpler than we make it. Start where you are, today.

It's easy to think we should be donating money or joining some charity, then get so worked up and overwhelmed that we end up doing nothing. Don't start there.

If all you can manage is quietly serving one person, start there. If you have a gift that can help a ministry at your church, start there. If you can impact a larger community, great, start there.

There's no expectation to be somewhere you're not. Christ will prune you and work in your heart to get you there. Today, we just need you to start.

The smaller the act, the better. Buy your coworker a mocha. Pick up groceries for someone who's homebound. Bring a casserole to a neighbor home from the hospital, or send a DoorDash gift card instead.

Build out from there, but never out of obligation, guilt, or shame. Build on the same foundation we see in Christ: love.

Jesus came "not to be served, but to serve, to give His life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45). That's the God we follow, and the One we're trying to become like.

This week, serve someone in your family or close circle, as small as it needs to be. Do the dishes before anyone asks, cover for a coworker who's falling behind, or run an errand for a neighbor. Find something you can do and just serve.
