..Matisse was not a sacred artist. However, this special exception was a gift to the French Dominican sisters in Vence, France. In his final years of frail health, Matisse worked intensively with Dominican sisters and priests to plan a Chapel of the Rosary and afterwards called it, in particular, “the fruit of my whole working life.” The chapel (glass, crucifix, stations of the cross, vestments) was evidently not only artistically but also personally transformative.
