We'll be at Market Street Park in Charlottesville tomorrow, noon-2pm!

On the first Saturday of each month, inshallah we join forces to prepare, package, and distribute food to our neighbors (those who need food and housing) in Market Street Park. We also have free English and Spanish translations of the Qur'an and other materials to distribute. Alhamdulillah!

Disabled people have always played a role in direct action organizing. Using networks of care and creative hacks, we can bring access and support to mobilizations that often presume a nondisabled body or neurotypical mind. These organizers will share their tactics to make direct action organizing possible and sometimes cripping what organizing looks like.

Recently there's been a lot of problematic discourse about unhoused people on the Downtown Mall, with a few shop owners blaming the most vulnerable members of our community for their declining business. Others have described unhoused people as a threat to the "cleanliness" and "safety" of the Mall. As q***r folks, we know a little bit about how it feels to be viewed as dirty and dangerous. We will never tolerate or turn a blind eye to that kind of degrading and dehumanizing rhetoric. No one is "unclean," and everyone belongs here. We're proud to be a part of this neighborhood; we'll always do our best to be good neighbors, and we hope to see more businesses do the same.

"Oh believers, stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah!" IMCV chaplain Defines-hamidah has filed a Title IX complaint against Sweet Briar College for this blatantly transphobic, discriminatory policy.

This week, Sweet Briar College (SBC) amended their admissions policy to exclude trans, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming students. The new policy states that “an applicant is qualified for admission if she confirms that her s*x assigned at birth is female and that she consistently lives and identifies as a woman.” 🤮

This policy is blatantly transphobic and harmful to SBC students and community members, whose board of directors would rather uphold antiquated gender binaries than support the well-being of its students. It robs future students of opportunities, harms trans and nonbinary students who already attend SBC, and upholds the widespread marginalization of q***r people.

Trans and nonbinary students have ALWAYS been an integral part of the rich tapestry that is SBC. And they’re not going away. 💪🏳️‍⚧️

Join us in linking arms with SBC students, alumni, staff, and community members to fight this hateful policy. Let’s flood their inboxes and demand that they change their policy to embrace, not exclude, trans and nonbinary applicants. 📧 Email [email protected].
