Dear Laity and Clergy of Charlottesville District,

I greet you in the name of our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ who loves us and abides in us in God's overflowing grace, love, and peace.
My name is Hyo Lee. My wife, Kay and I are very excited that we will serve the district in the coming years. Last June, I transitioned to the Richmond District office from serving a local church during the pandemic. And on June 30 of this year, I have settled in at the district parsonage in Charlottesville. With this, I see this appointment change as an added blessing that I get to serve the Lord in Charlottesville area with you, as Rev. Danny Kesner said, “God's good people.”

Please know that I will be staying one week in Charlottesville and another in Richmond, alternating. As I seek to learn the district churches, laity, and clergy, so that I can best support you, I will be relying on the help of the three lay leaders and the leadership of the clergy association. But, for details, two District administrators will help me with coordinating my meetings and schedule. So, if you need to contact me or schedule meetings, Mrs. Linda Truslow ([email protected], 434-977-4254) and the Richmond district office Mrs. MaryKaye Cochran ([email protected], 804-521-1124) will assist you. Or you can contact me at [email protected]

As we begin ministry together in this confusing, challenging, and uncertain time, I would like to share with you the word of God that anchors my soul: Ephesians 3:20-21: “Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Italics are added)

I look forward to serving the Lord with you in the coming years.

Hyo Lee
Charlottesville/Richmond District Superintendent

FOODIES FOR CHRIST
Hello Charlottesville UMC District Churches – At your Charge Conferences this year, you heard about the 2020 Charlottesville UMC District virtual food drive, “Foodies for Christ”. Our District Superintendent, Danny Kesner has asked every church in the District to participate in this exciting event. We are partnering with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to help feed needy families in our areas this year. The Food Bank uses a wide variety of sources for food, including numerous food suppliers, farmers, etc. They are able to do so much more with their purchasing power than any of us individually could do. They order pallets and truck loads of food at one time, from sources all over the eastern seaboard. For every $1 provided directly to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. They will provide 4 meals; $5 provides 20 meals. Donating through the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank greatly increases our giving power and impact on the hunger in our communities.
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank has developed an easy way for us to donate, either as a church from individual donations targeted to “Foodies for Christ” in your offerings, and your financial team then donates a single check to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank; or you as individuals can go to the website directly and securely donate online. The website is live now and will be accepting our donations through the first week in December. Here is the link to the donation page: https://www.brafb.org/foodiesforchrist/ Just click on the link and you will be taken directly to the “Foodies for Christ” fall food drive page where you will be able to help those in need this holiday season. Let’s all get behind this wonderful cause and help others.
God Bless each of you.
Danny Kesner, District Superintendent;
John Glass, Dian McNaught, Bill and Linda Stead - Charlottesville UMC District Associate Lay Leaders

Lay Servant Academy (LSA) – Virtual Training for Trying Times
November 14 @ 8:45 am - 4:00 pm

The 2020 Lay Servant Academy will be held via Zoom on Saturday, November 14. The courses being offered are I Love to Tell the Story, Older Adult Ministries, Online Worship, and Formacion Spiritual/Spiritual Formation.

Leaders are pleased this year to offer a Spanish course titled “Formacion Spiritual/Spiritual Formation” with Dr. Iosmar Alvarez.

Formacion Spiritual/Spiritual Formation with Dr. Iosmar Alvarez.
Course Description: “Formacion Spiritual/Spiritual Formation creates the foundation for” Making Passionate Spiritual Disciples,” who will become Passionate Spiritual Leaders. This course will also focus on leading small groups in pandemic times effectively to help leaders develop a generative approach to organizing and leading ministries, driving for new levels of missional effectiveness. The course is designed to help a ministry leader get to its next step. These steps represent principles and processes that have been designed, tested and refined for 15 years. Our hope is to move each ministry leader to a place where they are;
• Continually developing their own spiritual capacity, as well as of its leaders
• Growing the ability to understand and respond to context effectively.
• Constantly improving its ability to contribute to the growth of disciples

Each course costs $30. The courses count for renewal for Certified Lay Servants and Certified Lay Speakers.
