Immanuel Lutheran Church

Immanuel Lutheran Church Lutheran Church in Charlottesville, Virginia Immanuel Lutheran Church has been doing so in Charlottesville and around since 1869.

Immanuel Lutheran Church is a group of people who do not have all the answers, and who only know some of the questions. We are people who fail daily, who break easily, and who (as Luther put it) “sin boldly.” In other words, we are people a lot like you. As a member congregation of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod we exist to proclaim, marvel in, and spread the massive mercy, un-out-sin-able fo

rgiveness, and overwhelming good news of Jesus’ dying and rising love for you and all people. To learn more about who we are, please pay us a visit!

Have you ever felt like you're constantly trying to make a name for yourself? Exhausted from keeping up appearances and proving your worth?

Here's the beautiful truth we explored this Sunday: You don't have to. God has already put His name on you. In baptism, He marked you as His own—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Before you could say a word, before you could do anything to earn it, He claimed you. That name can't be erased, no matter how much dirt and grime life throws your way.

This Sunday we began a new series on the Divine Service—discovering how God meets us, serves us, and reminds us whose we are every single week. The invocation isn't just words; it's God renaming you, reminding you that you belong to Him. You can even trace it—make the sign of the cross and remember: you are marked, claimed, and loved.

Ever wonder if God could really love YOU—with all your doubts, secret sins, and hidden fears? You're not alone.

This Pentecost, we're reminded of Peter—the disciple who walked on water then sank in doubt, who declared Jesus as Christ then stood in His way, who denied Jesus three times when it mattered most. If anyone had reason to question God's love, it was Peter. Yet Jesus sought him out, restored him, and filled him with the Holy Spirit. That same fisherman, full of fear and failure, preached a sermon that brought 3,000 to faith.

The same Jesus who was born for Peter, died for Peter, and rose for Peter—that same Jesus does it all for YOU. The same Spirit that empowered Peter lives in you right now. Come to Him with your doubts and fears. The answer is yes—He loves you, forgives you, and cares for you completely.

What if God wants you to overhear His most intimate conversation? In John 17, Jesus leaves the door open to His deepest prayer with the Father—not because He needs us to hear, but because He desperately wants us to know Him.

Here's the stunning truth Jesus reveals: "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ." Eternal life isn't just something that starts after we die. It begins the moment we truly know the God who is dependable, the "Amen God" we can finally count on when everything else falls apart.

Jesus knows all the false gods competing for our hearts—our accomplishments, our control, even ourselves. His prayer is that we'd stop trusting in storehouses we build and start trusting in the only One who remains when skin falls off our face and everything crumbles. He's not disgusted by our weakness. He's inviting us to truly know Him.

That's eternal life. Right now. And it's yours.

We live in a world desperately searching for connection. Like the ancient Athenians with their forest of idols and altar "to the unknown God," we're all looking for something to make us feel secure—whether it's money, pleasure, anger, or the latest distraction in our pockets.

But here's the good news Paul proclaimed in Acts 17: The God you're searching for is searching for you. And unlike every other "god" that demands more from you, this God is a giver. He doesn't need your performance, your anxiety, or your perfect sacrifices. He sent His Son to give Himself on the cross—full of forgiveness and infinite love.

You can stop searching. Someone is listening. He knows your name, and He's connected Himself to you. That's the Gospel we get to share with a disconnected, hurting world.

What would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? Many answer: "Welcome home."

There's a deep longing in each of us for home—a place where we're utterly loved, completely safe, and can truly rest. On the night Jesus was betrayed, surrounded by fear and anxiety, He spoke these words to His troubled disciples: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. In my Father's house are many rooms. I go to prepare a place for you" (John 14).

Here's the beautiful truth: you don't have to wait for that home. Through Jesus, home comes to you right now. Wherever you are—in your failures, your trauma, your darkest nights—Jesus is there saying, "You are utterly loved. You are completely safe. You are forever mine." This home is already prepared, decked out with greater grace and fuller forgiveness than you could ever comprehend.

You have a home in Jesus. Right now, wrapped up in Him. And one day, face to face, you'll hear what you've always longed to hear: "Welcome home, child. Welcome home!"

Remember that old pizza place number from childhood? The one you dialed without thinking because it meant comfort and home? Psalm 23 is like that—the familiar words we turn to when everything else is shaken.

This Sunday we explored three powerful truths hidden in the Good Shepherd Psalm: STILL—the Lord who was, is, and will be your shepherd, even now. THOU—how the valley changes our prayers from talking about God to crying out directly to Him. PURSUE—God's goodness and mercy don't just follow you; they hunt you down with relentless love.

Whether you're in the hospital room, facing loss, or walking through your own valley of shadows, you have a God who chases you through death and hell just to look you in the eye and say, "Peace be with you." The Lord is STILL your shepherd. No matter what.
