In Matthew 21, Jesus encounters a fig tree on the road that has leafs but no figs. He curses the tree, which withers and dies before the disciple's astonished eyes. Jesus’ curse on the fig tree powerfully demonstrated His authority to judge everything and everyone within creation. While appearances can deceive people, God knows the truth. He knows if what people see on the outside truly reflects what is in your heart. God rightfully expects His people to bear fruit that comes from a heart that belongs to Him. For God’s children, bearing fruit offers evidence of genuine faith. Just as a fruit tree should naturally bear fruit, the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit flows naturally from a redeemed heart. God rejects fruitless religion but empowers obedient faith. Surrender to God not only removes the penalty for sin but invites you into a fruitful and flourishing life.
