Simon Peter by faith declares that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. Jesus responds by giving him a new name, with a new purpose. We like Peter experience disorientation and are also renewed by the Spirit of God, who calls us to a new orientation, a new identity. “Thus says the Lord: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come and my deliverance be revealed.” (Isaiah 56:1)

“Do the right thing” is a phrase you have perhaps heard at times whispered in your ear. Perhaps it meant tearing something apart after you had just finished repairing it, because it was not right. Perhaps it meant taking time to help someone though you really didn’t have much time to spare. Doing what is right is always a choice, helping to maintain justice. We don’t always get it right; we fall short, but knowing the difference is what matters. Through these ancient words of Isaiah, God is still speaking a truth relevant to our times. These words apply to governments and leaders as well as every day people. God calls us to just lives and systems of power that do what it right, not for the most powerful, but for the weakest and most vulnerable. Doing what is right is a choice made to live for others. In all of your daily choices, call on the Lord again today. You will receive insight, courage, and deliverance to do what is right for others.

In Isaiah we hear that God’s house will be a house of prayer for all peoples, gathering the outcasts from Israel and all nations. Though a Canaanite woman with unflinching faith and trust in Jesus, today’s gospel foreshadows God’s outward mission toward the nations. This story reminds us to be open to and welcoming of all who come into this holy house of prayer seeking safety, help, and hope.
