“Above all, love deeply…” (1 Peter 4:8)
This is a keystone verse that speaks the Good News of Jesus to any who will listen. It is also the first part of a verse that has been used to justify evil and corrupted thinking for generations. It’s true that loving deeply “covers over a multitude of sins”… BUT it doesn’t excuse, justify, or empower the ongoing abuse or neglect of people, “loved ones” or “enemies” alike. Instead it empowers us to understand that forgiveness and grace (the desire and ability God gives for whole-life change that grounded in reality) are powerful to deal with sin. Sin is wrong doing, but love also confronts wrong believing, and thinking by shifting the paradigm of our worldview from self-centered pride and arrogance that makes others less than to elevating them to highly valued and favored created beings who deserve my curiosity, compassion and understanding to love them regardless of what I think about the way they live their lives. So yes, love deeply, because true love is about living with others, it’s about sacrificing for others, it’s about considering them as valuable and even more important than I am. It’s about caring for them (strangers too) and meeting their intrinsic God-given needs in legitimate ways by utilizing the very gifts God has so generously provided for His children. It’s about speaking words that cultivate life to them. Words that are cleansing, freeing, healing and restoring so that they become the best version of who they have always been according to God’s creative order—the very thing Jesus already does in everyday moments of every day. It’s about removing obstacles to His love, goodness and beauty so that all people everywhere, in all things, might praise Him and recognize His glory! This is what it means to “love deeply”.

Today is Pentecost Sunday! This is an amazing reminder that we are meant to live life with God, by His Spirit. On this day almost 2000 years ago a small group of 120 disciples of Jesus, made up of men, women, and children, the Holy Spirit that had been promised by Jesus was poured out on them to baptize and fill them with the very Presence and Power of God. This is a unique experience that is still available to those who securely place their faith in Jesus and His work of forgiveness & freedom, healing, & hope, reconciliation & restoration on the Cross. This promise means God by His Holy Spirit will never leave or forsake us (presence) and that He will give us grace, kindness, and the ability to be whole people who act out mercy and justice with and on behalf of others (power). This is your opportunity to be this kind of person—one who walks in the power and presence of Jesus everyday. Let us invite you to take a step closer to Jesus today, receive His gifts of forgiveness & freedom, healing & hope, reconciliation & restoration.

We will not be gathering this week as it is a “Civic” Holiday Weekend meant to focus on rest and family. We honor these days to do something different, not because it is a civic holiday so much, but because many families use these days for vacation and rest. So we want to lean into that healthy lifestyle with Jesus, and not apart from him. Likewise we will not gather next Sunday as it is often a vacation week for many (us included!).
We look forward to being back together on the 7th for Brunch and Worship and a new Series within our Acts of the Spirit Study — “Households of the Kingdom” which will run through the Summer.

As a simple church we’ve chosen during this season to meet in a home, this adds to our value “Welcome Home” because we value hospitality, close vulnerable connections & trust, but we also value intentional unity through diversity.

What does this verse mean exactly? It means that we don’t have to exist in fear and anxiety if we belong to Christ Jesus. He will give us a new Spirit, a new heart, a new way of thinking, feeling, and doing. He will give us power—the ability through grace to do what pleases God and treat others with dignity and respect regardless of who they are. He will give us love that revolutionizes our hearts and beliefs so that we see people through the eyes of compassion, and he give us self-discipline or more accurately a sober-mind that enables us to think and act sensibly. But here is the truth, we have to stay connected to that very same Holy Spirit. These things aren’t an automatic reality, they are a way of life (lifestyle) that requires of us a closer relationship with and understanding of the ways of Father God, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

In a world where we are seeing very little in the natural to Hope in and are losing our peace and joy, we have to look for it again in the powerful arms of a loving, caring and good God, Jesus the Christ. It is through His Holy Spirit that we are able to face the pressure of these daily and mounting challenges! We can have Hope in someone who is lasting and consistent. Don’t buy the lies that God is only interested in punishing sin and evil. That kind of deity doesn’t leave their throne to die for wrong-doers. But Jesus did! This shows His kindness and compassion to give us an opportunity of reconciliation with Him. Put your hope and trust in Him!
