During Lent this year we're doing something creative. Each week we'll be exploring the themes of Lent through a piece of art.
This week Steve and I explain the concept a bit on the podcast and read an essay from Richard Rohr.

If you're interested in joining us (regardless of where you live), I'll include a Google Form in the comments and you can send me your email.
The link for this week's podcast from Ash Wednesday is also in the comments.

Joseph Phillips and Sara Kay Mooney were on our latest podcast episode speaking all things Advent, poetry, hospitality and disillusionment. I love hearing their take on what it means to welcome a stranger. Y’all gotta hear about Joseph getting lost in Tennessee and the true story of how we found his way. So thankful for Sara Kay Mooney sharing her journey of connecting with certain poets and what it’s meant to her faith. If you’d like to receive her weekly emails during Advent with a poem and some thoughts on it, dm us or comment below and we’ll send you the link! As always, links to the podcast are in the comments below.

THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS
• • •
We have a shorter podcast episode for you filled with the strange story of a headless chicken, the temptation of “doomscrolling,” and a call to authentically seek the beautiful truth. When nihilism is the language of our culture, pointing out the possibility of grace and beauty is a subversive act. The text is Philippians 4:4-9. Let’s join together in our subversiveness to see what beautiful graces we might be overlooking today.

PSA to all my neighbors (especially those who know ):
In the latest podcast episode, Joseph does something absolutely radical...something he’s countless times made fun of my entire life—replied to with sarcastic “tell me more”s...he shared his own dream with us! This is unheard of. If you, like me (Maddie), have been made to feel like your dreams are only ridiculous byproducts of your greasy dinner and the last show you watched before bed—I hope you’ll join with me in listening to the episode “Moving Forward” and using the full force of your internet skills to harass my brother in the most loving fashion about his newfound sensitivity to his dream world 🛌 💭 😴

WHAT GOD PREFERS
I haven’t heard too many sermons on Matthew 21:23-32. I always overlooked the parable beside Jesus’s flawless retort. I’m a sucker for impeccable logic. There’s a message here though and Joseph and Steve illuminate it. Which response from the two sons does God prefer? Are those our only options or does it exemplify how limited we can be?

Why do we prefer being politically correct over correcting our moral deficit—our enormous lack of compassion for our neighbor?

We’d choose the appearance of good over the dirty work of casting out our own evils.

Check out the “Scandal of Grace” episode of the podcast to understand why the 2nd picture matters. Personally, I prefer “octopi” because it follows the logic of cactus and cacti; however, option #3 brings up a valid point. How do you say the plural of octopus?
Beyond learning about the ocean, there’s a wealth of information concerning the parable of the workers in the vineyard and what wanting what is “fair” really means for us. How does fairness relate to grace? Check it out in the link below 🎧

Boy, oh boy, do we have a juicy podcast episode for you. Madeline speaking here 👋🏼 Today, Joseph and Steve go through the Matthew 18 text which gives us the Christian approach towards dealing with conflict. What does healthy confrontation look like? Which relationships are worth salvaging? Why do our families press the same buttons they invented in us? What happens when we incur conflict outside of community? Do we all feel awkward about the backwards way public conflict turns private and private conflict becomes our entire twitter feeds and, arguably, most importantly, what does Jesus mean when he says to treat those who do not respond to our attempts at reconciliation like gentiles and tax collectors? The links are included below to hear our pastors’ best approach at answering these questions.
Much love, neighbors.

I’d be the first to roll my eyes at someone asking for my life story and probably reply with “yeah we’re not there yet.” I don’t enjoy forced narrations—this conversation, however, isn’t forced at all. This was a longggg time coming. It’s so cool to hear two old friends, Steve and Joseph, share the details of their one precious life. I love that we can know people for decades and still piece together parts of their stories we weren’t necessarily privy to until a conversation like this one.

Giving context to people’s lives is one of the primary reasons I got my bachelors in history. It’s riveting to analyze someone, but it feels like an actual gift to really know them. I’m so happy to know Joseph and Steve. This was one of the coolest podcasts they’ve done and I don’t feel a single ounce of shame for bragging on them.

They’re cool. How they got to where they are is also cool. Their contribution to our world—mega cool.

Hope you enjoy this conversation on vocation.

Also here is a snippet of what Joseph had to say about this:

“I've had a hundred conversations in the last few weeks with people wrestling with "calling" and figuring out what is most true and good for them.

Mary Oliver asks the urgent question in her poem Summer Day:
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?”

I marvel at what your contribution to this world is could be, Neighbor 🧡
