To the ancient Celts Samhain was the official end of summer. The mystical hag of winter, Cailleach Bheure, began her reign. It was a time where beginnings and ends meet and the veil between worlds opened up.
To ward of angry spirits, the Celts carved faces on turnips and other available root vegetables. These eventually became the pumpkin Jack O' Lanterns that we are more familiar with. And Samhain merged with All Saint's Day to become Halloween.
