Forgiveness can be one of the most difficult aspects of discipleship. We can easily get this wrong by not understanding why we must forgive. All too frequently, people think they don’t need to forgive until the recipient deserves it or asks for it — but that may never happen; however, we are never to forgive because someone deserves it. We forgive because we love.

The account of King Nebuchadnezzar is an example of where one man’s unchecked ego led. It is wise for us to humble ourselves and give the deserving glory to God. Let us denounce haughtiness and remember that God humbles the proud.

Humans have a tendency to place great importance on the physical things they acquire during their lifetime. We can get so caught up on things such as money, cars, clothes, but have we stopped to ask: Do we truly own any of these things? What would our attitude be if we were to lose all of our possessions?

Are there actions required of us to receive salvation? In Romans 5, the apostle Paul calls salvation a “free gift” from God. Does that imply that baptism is nonessential for our salvation, and that we don’t have to do anything to accept the gift?

In John 8, the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman, who had been caught in sin, before Jesus hoping to test him and bring a charge against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. What did Jesus write? There are a number of ideas about what Jesus wrote, but perhaps we need to focus less on explanations of what was written on the ground and more on the point of this account.
