Portiuncula Indulgence
Our Lady of the Angels Monastery celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels and encourages the faithful to receive the Portiuncula Indulgence given by the Church each year on August 2. The Portiuncula Indulgence given only on the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels was originally proclaimed by Pope Honorius III in 1216 or 1217 and has been confirmed throughout the centuries by other Popes. This indulgence is called the Portiuncula Indulgence because it was originally extended to anyone who visited the little Portiuncula chapel where St. Francis heard our Lord ask him to “rebuild His Church”. The chapel was named the Portiuncula of Mary of the Angels. After hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visited the Portiuncula in Assisi, Pope Sixtus IV extended the Indulgence to all Franciscan Churches in 1481. The indulgence has been extended to anyone who visits a Franciscan Church on the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels with the intention of receiving this Indulgence.

An indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment due to sin. All sin “has a double consequence” (CCC 1472). When your sins are forgiven, it is the eternal punishment that is remitted, however the temporal punishment remains. Temporal punishment can be remitted partially through the Grace received in Reconciliation (CCC 1496), works of devotion, penance, and Charity and through the reception of indulgences (CCC 1478). The Church receives this power to bind and loose from sin from Christ Himself (Matt. 16:19). The Church gives these remissions (indulgences) from the “treasury of the merits of Christ and the Saints” (CCC 1478). Indulgences can be applied to the temporal punishment from your personal sins or can be applied to a holy soul in Purgatory. You can only receive one plenary indulgence per day. "An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin." (CCC 1471) The Portiuncula Indulgence is a plenary indulgence and given under the following conditions;

Devoutly visit a Franciscan Church with the intention of
receiving the Portiuncula Indulgence

Receive Holy Communion.

Pray the Apostles Creed and for the intentions of the Pope
(for example, 1 each; Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Obtain a good confession within 20 days before the visit,
the day of the visit, or 20 days after the visit.

Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin.

St. Alphonsus Liguori Pray for Us!

Short Bio — St. Alphonsus Liguori, (1696-1787) was a prolific theologian and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (The Redemptorists). Renowned for his profound devotion to the Eucharist and insightful theological teachings, he is the patron saint of moral theologians.

Biography St. Alphonsus Liguori, (1696-1787) was born in Marianella, near Naples, in Italy. When he was young, he displayed exceptional intelligence and piety, earning a doctorate in civil and canon law by the age of 16. Feeling a calling to dedicate his life to God and the service of others, however, he abandoned his legal career and pursued ordination to the priesthood. He was ordained at the age of 30 in 1726.

Throughout his priestly ministry, Liguori focused on preaching missions and retreats, seeking to renew people’s faith and draw them closer to the Eucharist. He frequently preached on the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and encouraged frequent reception of Holy Communion as a source of spiritual nourishment and grace.

In 1732, Liguori founded the Redemptorists, a religious congregation dedicated to promoting devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Redemptorists' charism also revolved around reaching out to the most abandoned, including the poor and marginalized, and offering them hope through God's love and mercy.

As a prolific writer, Liguori authored numerous works on moral theology, spirituality, and Eucharistic devotion. His most famous work, "The Glories of Mary," remains a classic in Marian theology and devotion. He is remembered for his practical and merciful counsel, always seeking to lead souls to reconciliation, and union with God.

St. Alphonsus was canonized as a saint in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871. His spiritual writings, particularly on the Eucharist, continue to inspire and guide the faithful worldwide. As the patron saint of moral theologians, his example reminds believers of the profound love and presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the enduring mercy of God. St. Alphonsus Liguori, pray for us!

ST. IGNATIUS LOYOLA

This week we celebrate a spiritual master! Not only is St. Ignatius Loyola the founder of the Jesuits, but the legacy of his life of prayer -- now called Ignatian spiritualty -- inspired believers the world over. Injured as a young soldier, Ignatius spent his time in recovery reading the lives of the saints. They inspired his soul to holy heroism, changing his life forever. Ignatius gathered a group of friends who also desired to be "contemplatives in action," finding God in all circumstances. This became the Jesuits -- a great missionary and teaching order. Ignatius himself was constantly attuned to his own inner promptings. This self-knowledge -- open to the movements of the Holy Spirit -- led him to be an incredibly astute spiritual director. For Ignatius, recognizing God as the first principle of one's life determined everything. How has God changed you?
