Join us this Sunday at 9 and 11 am as we continue our series, 1 Thessalonians: Enduring Hope in Unstable Time, and look at 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16.

Every Christian wants to be able to say, โ€œGod is really at work in this church.โ€ But how can we know that? Are there signs? The Bible is abundantly clear that God works through his Word. But do we know the kind of work the Word does in people so that when we see it we can actually recognize it, and even more, give thanks to God for it? Thatโ€™s exactly what Paul does in this passage. Something about the Thessalonian church makes him confident and thankful that Godโ€™s Word has been working. So what is it?

THREE WAYS WE RESPOND WHEN WE FEEL THE WEIGHT OF WHAT WE'VE DONE

The easy move, and most of us make it, is to shrink what we've done. God, I'm not that bad. Just look at so-and-so. A few little white lies, sure, but I'm not as bad as them.

Other times we go the opposite direction and make it too big for God. He could never forgive me. You don't know the things I've done, the things I've thought. I've asked Him once, twice, a third time, and I keep repeating the same sin. He's out of patience.

There's a third response, and it's the one the psalmist lands on: facing it honestly. God, I see my sin. I see my heart. I know I can't stand in Your presence. But I also know You're the God who forgives.

When we bring it to Him honestly, we find Him right where the psalmist found Him, ready to forgive. Owning the weight is what opens the door to having it lifted.

WHAT SUFFERING DOES THAT NOTHING ELSE CAN

Darkness has a unique ability to accomplish what only darkness can. Our perspective on suffering is just off.

At Boeing in Charleston, before a 787 ships, machines lock onto the wings and bend them upward. They test these carbon fiber wings past their capacity, past anything that plane will ever face in the air. Then they hand it over: it's been tested, and it made it through.

If you've been through suffering, you know what it feels like to be in your own stress test. Pulled, and stretched, and pushed, and bent to a limit where it feels like the nuts and bolts are about to explode. By God's grace alone, you didn't.

Looking back, you see a God who was holding you fast every single moment, turning you into something. You never would have thought it would lead to this.

Suffering does what nothing else can: when God is all you've got, the things you used to chase lose their grip. You get to the other side and say, He's the only thing that I want, because He came through in ways I could have never dreamed.
