On this Memorial Day, we pause to affirm the sanctity of life and remember those whose lives have been lost—in war, in the ravages of conflict, or in the carnage of injustice. We honor their memory with a renewed commitment to peace, righteousness, justice, and love.

We also remember the grief carried by families and communities, trusting in the promise that “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). May God’s comfort surround all who mourn, and may His justice awaken in us a deeper resolve to work for a world where peace prevails.

Let us hear the call of the prophet in Isaiah 2:4 anew. Until that day comes, may we be faithful stewards of remembrance, living in ways that honor life by seeking reconciliation, pursuing justice, and walking humbly with our God.

The Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church is acutely aware of, and deeply concerned about, the recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to deny protection to Section Two of the Voting Rights Act.

Today we join people of faith across this nation in grieving the horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. We mourn the lives lost, pray for the wounded and traumatized, and stand in solidarity with our Muslim neighbors whose sacred space was violated by hatred and violence.

The West Virginia Council of Churches affirms what our Public Policy Priorities declare: “Every person is created in the image of God and therefore possesses sacred worth and dignity.” Violence rooted in hatred of another religion, race, or culture is a sin against both neighbor and God.

As Christians, we reject fear, scapegoating, and rhetoric that dehumanizes others. We are called instead to be peacemakers, to defend the vulnerable, and to “love our neighbors as ourselves.” In this painful moment, we recommit ourselves to interfaith friendship, public witness against hate, and the hard holy work of building communities where all people may worship without fear.

We invite churches across West Virginia to pray this week for the Muslim community in San Diego and for all communities targeted by violence and extremism.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9

Our hearts are with the Islamic Center of San Diego, the victims and families impacted by today's horrific act of violence, and Muslims everywhere as they prepare to celebrate Eid al-Adha later this month.

Muslims, like all Americans, deserve the religious freedom to worship and practice their faith safely.

Anti-Muslim rhetoric and violence is on the rise across the United States. It's on all of us to push back against any and all hate against the Muslim members of our communities.

BREAKING: Ahead of this Sunday’s Christian nationalist rally on the National Mall, we’re projecting messages in support of religious freedom for ALL on the walls of Washington DC’s National Gallery of Art.

We reject Christian nationalism! Democracy, not theocracy!

The projections, a collaboration between Interfaith Alliance and Robin Bell, will shine bright on the National Mall ahead of Trump’s “Rededicate 250” event, in which a roster of almost exclusively conservative Christians will mark America’s 250th anniversary with a “rededication of our country as One Nation to God.”

Share this post to help make sure our counter message is spread far and wide. ⬇️

America was not founded as a Christian nation. And we refuse to let anyone rewrite that history!
