Through and Through

May God himself, the God of peace sanctify you through and through. 1 Thessalonians 5:23, NIV

On November 4, 2021, according to the "Idaho Statesman" article, a man in Colorado was fed up with all the cobwebs under his mother’s house. He crawled under the house with a blowtorch and proceeded to incinerate them. However, he also set the house on fire. The man and his mother were rescued, but the house sustained $100,000 in damages.

Recommended Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5: 23 – 24

There are a lot of cobwebs in the corners and crevices of our lives—areas of imperfection and sin—attitudes that are unfit for a believer, habits that are defective, and thoughts that need disinfecting. Our own efforts at improvement are inadequate.

The only real way to combat temptation is with the power of the Word and in the strength of the Spirit. Lean on Jesus and let Him work in and through you as you grow in personal holiness and grace.

[God] cuts short our old, self-willed nature to make way for our new nature in Christ, which works in willing cooperation with Him.

To Glorify and to Enjoy

Father, glorify Your name.
John 12:28

There’s a famous question and answer in the Westminster Shorter Catechism we should always remember: What is the chief end of man? Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

Recommended Reading:
John 12: 27 – 36
Jerry Bridges said there was a time in his life when he thought these were two different aims. He would glorify God on earth and enjoy Him in heaven. But he learned differently.
“The truth is…we cannot glorify God—either by our lives or by worship—unless we are enjoying Him. How could you praise someone whom you don’t enjoy? How could you genuinely seek to honor someone by your conduct merely out of a sense of obligation?”[1]

John Piper puts it this way: “The chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever.”

Jesus had one goal in life—to glorify the Father. No matter the culture or our circumstances, our lives can do the same. But that means cultivating a joyful relationship with Him, one marked by faith, obedience, and cheerfulness. And one that constantly says: “Lord, glorify Your name in me today!”

If we’re to glorify God in the way we live, we must make God’s glory our primary aim.

Who’s in Charge?

And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings.
Acts 17:26

A large log was swept from the bank of a fast-flowing river and is hurtling through the rapids. (The log is our world.) On the log are thousands of tiny ants, all of whom think they are in control of the log. (We are the ants.)

Recommended Reading:
Daniel 2: 20 – 22
Is anything more absurd than for a tiny ant to think it is in charge of a giant log that is careening on the waves of a raging river? And yet, men and women often think that we can change the outcome of this tumultuous world and bring it safely to what we think is the best outcome. The Bible states the obvious opposite: This world belongs to God, and God alone is able to work out His purposes for the world He created. The ancients believed God ruled over all (Deuteronomy 32:8; Job 12:23) as did the prophets (Daniel 2:20-22) and the apostles (Acts 17:26).

Don’t let the tumult in our world create fear in your heart. God has been, is, and will remain on the throne ruling His creation.

Nothing is beyond [God’s] control….The Bible is clear that God is in control of everything that happens.

Prophetic Markers

And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
2 Peter 1:19

In order to explain to young children how long it will be before Christmas, parents may say: First, the weather begins to turn cooler. Then, we celebrate Thanksgiving. Then, we get a Christmas tree and decorate the house. Then, we shop for presents and put them under the tree. And then, it will be Christmas Day.

Recommended Reading:
1 John 3: 2
While no one knows the exact date of Christ’s return (Matthew 24:36), prophecy gives us signposts to inform our progress toward His appearing. At this stage in God’s prophetic timetable, Christ’s appearing for His Church (the Rapture of the Church) is the next event. Nothing stands in the way of this happening; it could happen today! But there are certain trends in the world which indicate that we are drawing closer to that day: tumultuous geopolitical and economic conditions, deteriorating moral standards, and spiritual confusion. Those increasing trends mean we are approaching Christ’s return. Every believer must live with the understanding that today could be the day that we “see Him as He is” (1 John 3:2).

We are not a post-war generation, but a pre-peace generation. Jesus is coming.

The Coming Trillionaire

He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
Ecclesiastes 5:10

One day in the not-too-distant future we’re going to learn about the world’s first trillionaire. Elon Musk is about a third of the way there. Imagine the headlines that will accompany the announcement of one single person, whoever he or she is, who gains a net worth of a trillion dollars!

Recommended Reading:
Proverbs 22: 1 – 4
That person will be penniless and poverty-stricken compared to the child of God who trusts the Lord for all the provisions of life. While we should work hard, save wisely, give generously, and manage our material wealth with wisdom, we shouldn’t be consumed with gaining earthly wealth.

Ecclesiastes 5:10 says, “Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!” (NLT) The Lord knows how to satisfy our hearts while meeting all our needs. It’s not just our material needs He supplies. He takes care of us emotionally, spiritually, relationally, mentally, and eternally. A trillion dollars is nothing compared to a heart trusting in God.

God knows what we need and can always be trusted to provide it. And by giving us our daily bread, God is teaching us a deeper lesson. He wants us to learn that what we really need is himself.

Signal Mirrors

Oh, that my actions would consistently reflect your decrees!
Psalm 119:5, NLT

In the 1980s, a surgeon and his party were floating down the Colorado River when their raft got away from them. The cord wrapped around the doctor’s leg and dragged him across the rocks. His son cut the cord, but the wounded man was stranded with no way out. But a friend had a small mirror—a signal mirror. Using Morse code, the friend sent out a series of flashes that caught the eye of a pilot in a jetliner flying at 35,000 feet. The plane radioed for help, and soon the injured rafter was lifted to safety.

Recommended Reading:
2 Corinthians 3: 16 – 18
We don’t have to be very large, strong, important, or well-known to reflect the Lord’s glory. Signal mirrors are small enough to fit into any backpack or pants pocket. Yet they’re capable of transmitting signals as far as one hundred miles in the right conditions. Though we may be small and our time on earth fleeting, “all of us…can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image” (2 Corinthians 3:18, NLT).

Since we have entered into union with Christ, the life of Christ should be reflected in our lives.
Paul Enns

God’s Rescue Kit

I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
Philippians 1:19, NIV

Lifeguards at America’s beaches and lakes are getting a new lifesaving tool. Remote-controlled drones are set to monitor the waters, ready to drop a rescue kit to swimmers in trouble. When the kit hits the water, it will instantly inflate into a flotation tube, a bright yellow horseshoe with grab handles.

Recommended Reading:
Philippians 1: 18 – 21
God has two tools in His rescue kit for us—the prayers of God’s people for each other and the Spirit of Christ. Paul wrote Philippians while in Roman confinement. But he told the Philippians he was certain of deliverance. He knew it would come as his friends prayed and as God sent special provisions to his heart by the Spirit.

If you’re in over your head today, ask someone to pray for you—even as you keep the names of others on your own prayer list. Ask God to send you the strength you need by means of the Spirit. He will buoy you in today’s culture and give you courage for all that comes.

The Greek word translated provision in Philippians 1:19 means “bountiful supply” or “full resources.” Paul understood that he could rely on the complete resources of the Holy Spirit.
John MacArthur
