It was such a hit last year, we decided to do it again this year! The opening paragraph from tonight's talk is found below:

Midway in our life’s journey, I went astray
from the straight road and woke to find myself
alone in a dark wood. (Inferno, Canto I)

These are the famous opening lines of Dante’s Inferno, the first of his three-part narrative poem, the Divina Commedia, or in English, the Divine Comedy. We’ll discover later in the poem that the day is April 8th, Good Friday, in the year 1300. While travelling through the seventh circle of Hell, Dante encounters the demon Malacoda, who explains to him, that hell was irreparably ruined twelve hundred and sixty-six years ago, plus one day and five hours, which would have been the exact moment the Gospels record the death of Christ upon the cross (Inferno, Canto XXI). This is not only an elegant way for Dante to give us the date of his descent into the Inferno, but it also tells us something about the nature of God’s love and the power of Christ’s death upon the cross. Christ’s death upon the cross, that highest and greatest expression of God’s love, ruined hell. A ruined prison can hold no one captive against their will. That is both the comfort and the terror of the Inferno.

St. Alban's is once again in exile while Summerall undergoes necessary renovations. But our banishment is far less painful since we are in the new and luxurious Bastin Hall! Special thanks to Rev. Jonathan Bennett and his team from Church of the Holy Spirit Daniel Island, who are wonderful and generous mission partners of our chapel. And thanks also to Cadet Abe Whitesell, who preached the sermon for us on our first service of Holy Communion in the new year! Off to a good start!
