Star Gospel Mission

Star Gospel Mission Founded in 1904 by Obadiah Dugan, Star Gospel Mission predates any Christian welfare organization in the Holy City.

Originally established in the old Star Vaudeville Theater that had been closed by the city fathers because of the undesirable element associated with it; The Star Gospel Mission gleans its name from the historic theater and firmly entrenches itself within the identity of the city of Charleston. With the continued generosity of the Charleston community, Star Gospel Mission keeps its doors open to a

ll persons in crisis and need; providing food, clothing, shelter and spiritual guidance. We are keeping faith with the founding vision by providing help to the needy and sharing the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all those who come through its doors.

Summer essentials: sunshine, sunscreen… and hope.

This summer, we’re looking for 100 new donors to give $40 a month and help provide something that never goes out of season: hope.

Your monthly gift helps provide meals, shelter, recovery support, transportation, and the encouragement people need as they work toward lasting stability.

Because just like the essentials we reach for every summer, hope is essential too.

Will you be one of the 100?

100 donors. $40 a month. Endless impact. Read more at https://www.stargospelmission.org/blog/the-summer-of-40-give-40-change-a-story

A Walk In Their Shoes 2026 reminded us that compassion moves. Through every step, conversation, prayer, and act of support, our community came together to walk in love and stand alongside neighbors experiencing homelessness and hardship.

NEW BLOG POST! During A Walk In Their Shoes 2026, participants stepped into an experience designed to create deeper awareness and compassion for those facing homelessness in our community.

For Lizl Kotz, the night became more than a challenge, it became a reminder that understanding begins when we choose to truly see one another.

Thank you, Lizl, for sharing your heart and your experience so beautifully. Read about her full experience on our blog. Click the link in the comments below or visit https://www.stargospelmission.org/blog/f7wfptswestj2ftx1olnw2sl2qbe40

On Pentecost Sunday, our community stepped beyond comfort and into compassion. Together, we walked in love, side by side, supporting our neighbors experiencing homelessness, substance use disorder, and hardship in our city.

More than a fundraiser, A Walk In Their Shoes 2026 became a reminder that love is not passive. Love moves. Love sees. Love shows up.

Thank you to every person who walked, gave, prayed, volunteered, and stood with us. Because when a community walks in love, lives can change.

Community care starts with people willing to show up, serve, and make a difference.

We are so grateful to the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing Student Government Association for choosing Star Gospel Mission’s Morning Light program as their nonprofit beneficiary for the past two semesters.

Through merchandise sales, fundraising events, and student-led initiatives, these future healthcare leaders came together to support unhoused mothers and children in our community with compassion, generosity, and purpose.

Thank you for believing in the mission of Morning Light and for helping create brighter futures for families across the Lowcountry.

Today, we honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to others and to our country. Their sacrifice reflects a profound kind of love, one rooted in courage, selflessness, and laying down one’s life for another.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we also pause in gratitude, remembrance, and prayer for those who never made it home.

May we continue building communities marked by compassion, unity, and hope, carrying forward the reminder that sacrifice is never forgotten.
