The Tudor’s Sacred Songs – 15th & 16th Century Anthems & Motets from Tudor England.

This is going to be a very special concert. Some of the most beautiful unaccompanied choral music ever written, spanning just over a century, from 1495 to the late 1500s. Some of the stellar composers include William Cornysh (1465-1523), John Taverner (c.1490-1545), Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585), John Sheppard (1515-1558), William Mundy (c.1529-1591), Robert Parsons c.1535-1572), William Byrd (1540-1623), Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656), Thomas Weelkes (1576-1623). Composers who inspired a generations of musicians and singers from all over the world.

Several of these gorgeously constructed motets and anthems are being performed for the first time in Charleston. The voices of The King’s Counterpoint’s splendid ensemble, Vox Regis, will be singing this glorious music in the stunning acoustics of the Cathedral oat msof St. John the Baptist’s this Sunday, 31st May at 2:00pm. Old St. Andrew’s as a point of reference on this old map of Pierpont. “Pierpont” as a geographical region seems to have all but disappeared nearly a century later.

This 1933 map of Pierpont subdivision, surveyed by Richard C. Rhett for the Pierpont Corporation, shows lots laid out along the Ashley River. The area was named for Reverend Benjamin Pierpont, who came to Charleston in 1691 to preach at the Congregational Church and who was granted the land in 1695.
The early 20th century saw a boom in the development of subdivisions in the greater Charleston area, as more cars filled the roads and notable bridges, like the Ashley River Bridge and Cooper River Bridge, were built to make travel easier. Throughout the month, we will be sharing plans and advertisements for early subdivision developments, showing how land was developed from agricultural use into the neighborhoods we recognize today.

This coming Thursday, 14th May, is Ascension Day. We will celebrate this important Feast Day with a Choral Evensong at 7.00pm, and we remain the ONLY church in Charleston to still hold a Full Choral Evensong on this day each year.

The service will last 40 minutes and is lead by Fr. Rich. Our Parish Choir will be singing and there is no sermon at this service.

Come and acclaim our Lord's Ascension into Heaven, exactly Forty Days after Easter Day. Our organist for the evening Is Nicholas Quardokus, and the music is:
