We have a long history of strong music and arts ministries hosting many community music and choral groups as part of our outreach to the city. SUNDAY MORNING: When you come to worship Sunday morning, please remember that there will be rolling road closures in downtown Charleston due to the bike race. The best way, and the simplest way, to get to the church is by the interstate. If you live in South Hills work your way to Corridor G, get on I64 East and exit at the Leon Sullivan exit. Turn left at the Clay Center, then right on Morris Street to the church. Those who live in the direction of Kanawha City, get on the I64 W and exit at Leon Sullivan. Turn left at the Clay Center, then right on Morris Street. We hope to see you in the morning!

Courageous Loyalty

Do you remember the story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” by Hans Christian Andersen? Although it is my paraphrase, the story reads as follows:

An emperor became obsessed with fine clothing. Two swindlers arrived and claimed they could make a magnificent suit of clothes that was invisible to anyone who was foolish or unfit for their position. No one wanted to appear foolish. So, the emperor’s advisors pretended to see the clothes. The emperor pretended to see the clothes. The townspeople pretended to see the clothes. Everyone knew something was wrong, but no one had the courage to say it.

Your Call to God’s Mission

Have you ever thought of yourself as called to ministry? Too many of us assume that “calling” belongs only to clergy. The truth is that every baptized follower of Jesus is called by God to ministry.

Several months ago, we looked at Matthew 4:18-22. (See: Your Call To God’s Mission) It was the story of Jesus calling Peter, Andrew, James, and John while they are at work. They are not searching for a new career or a new purpose. Jesus seeks them out and invites them: “Follow me.”

The call was both disruptive and transformative. Jesus asked them to reorder their priorities around God’s kingdom. So, they leave their nets and follow, showing that their relationship with Jesus takes precedence over work, status, and even family obligations.
