The Fruit of Self-Control

When it comes to self-control, I like these words from James, “Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19). Self-control is learning to respond with love rather than reacting without thinking.

It is not simply “trying harder” or suppressing your feelings. Self-control is, by God’s grace, the ability to manage your desires, emotions, words, and actions so that they are brought under the direction of God’s love.

Paul lists self-control as one of the fruit of the Spirit.

Three weeks from today, on Thursday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m., Christ Church will kick-off the 2026-2027 Renewed and Resounding Organ Recital Series with the internationally known organist, teacher and composer, Paul Fey, from Leipzig, Germany. Paul travels the world promoting the art of the pipe organ and has a HUGE following on Instagram, Tiktok and YouTube. Paul was originally scheduled to give a recital back in March, but a serious illness forced him to cancel his recital and his concert tour. We are excited that he will finally make it to Charleston as he begins his fall 2026 recital tour of the United States. The Kanawha Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is cosponsoring the concert and will provide a reception after the recital. The concert is free and open to the public. It will also be livestreamed on all of Christ Church's media platforms, including this page and Christ Church's YouTube channel. We hope to see you in three weeks on September 24!

Other recitals in the series include Dr. Richard Elliot from the Mormon Tabernacle on Sunday, November 22 at 2:00 p.m., and Olivier Latry from Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Sunday, February 28, 2027 at 2:00 p.m. (This recital is sponsored by the Rosencrance Family.) Our Minister of Worship Arts/Organist, David Donathan, will close the series on Sunday, April 18 at 2:00 p.m.

“Self-control is strength under the direction of wisdom.”

Self-control is not simply holding back. It is choosing to respond with love instead of reacting without thinking. When we are rooted in God’s love, it shapes how we handle anger, disagreement, and even the desire to retaliate.

The fruit of self-control is revealed in how we respond to the people around us.

Gentleness is one of those characteristics we often admire but don’t always understand. In a world that rewards being loud, forceful, and reactive, gentleness can easily be mistaken for weakness. We sometimes assume that strong people must be tough, decisive, and unwilling to back down. But Jesus offers us a different model.

Jesus described himself as “gentle and humble in heart” (Matthew 11:29). He could speak difficult truths, confront injustice, and challenge those who misused their power. Yet he never needed cruelty to demonstrate strength. His strength was expressed through compassion, patience, humility, and love.

"...gentleness is often mistaken for weakness. But when we start with Jesus, we discover that gentleness is strength in the hands of love."

This week, Rev. Dr. Timothy Bias reminds us that gentleness shapes how we speak, respond, lead, and even disagree with one another. When we love our neighbors, pray for those who hurt us, and choose love in difficult moments, we produce the fruit of gentleness.

At Christ Church, no matter who you are or what you have done, you are loved.
